Job summary

The Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and Research Center in Eugene, OR is seeking a Phlebotomist to join our laboratory team. We provide comprehensive, in‑house services, including laboratory specimen collection and testing.

  • Entry level role; no prior experience required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensure from an accredited school of phlebotomy recommended; current state licensure if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy and collect appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
  • Ensure pre-authorizations and complete consent (ABN) prior to the collection of limited coverage tests.
  • Maintain proper documentation per the quality assurance program, including accessioning logs, equipment records, and checklists.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and verify that all supplies are viable before use.
  • Send specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in house.
  • Process incoming orders for lab testing.
  • Process in‑house and incoming reports.
  • Update and file all daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs.
  • Operate designated laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Use equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently while maintaining the work area.
  • Perform waived lab testing under CLIA guidelines for personnel and record proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents for waived tests.
  • Comply with regulatory standards and adhere to OSHA compliance laws and universal precautions.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain a clean working environment and restock the phlebotomy and laboratory area as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and staff information.

The general pay scale for this position at WVCI is $19.00–$29.00. The actual hiring rate depends on prior experience, education, responsibilities, location, performance, and other factors.

Employment Type: Full Time, FTE 1.0

Physical Demands

Physical demands include full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, and lifting up to 40 lbs. The job requires sitting or standing for extensive periods and handling laboratory equipment, glassware, and needles. Corrected vision, color perception, hearing within normal range, and legible handwriting are required. Reasonable accommodations will be offered to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment

Employees regularly encounter direct contact with patients who may have exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, or transmissible infections. They also work with corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, glassware, and needles.
