Job summary

Talentify in Prestonsburg, KY is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy and related non-technical duties across hospital labs, outpatient sites, and off-site services. You will collect specimens by venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick, correctly label tubes, prioritize STAT draws, and ensure prompt transport for testing.

Under supervision you may train new staff and interns, follow all safety and infection control policies including PPE and N95 fit testing, greet patients and answer

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy and customer service skills required.
  • OSHA N95 respirator training and fit testing required.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and PPE guidelines.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and approved phlebotomy program.

  • Performs clerical/data-entry tasks and maintains organization of supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Overview

The Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens for testing.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly work flow.
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties.
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.
  • Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job-related hazards.
  • Responsibly follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Blood borne and Airborne Pathogens.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Will greet patients and answer phones in the outpatient lab when required.
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
  • Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload.
  • Performs various pre-analytical functions of specimens (collection, labeling, transport, processing), including Custody and Control Drug Screens.
  • Assists in keeping supplies at stock level.
  • Completes daily log sheets.
  • Clerical: answers telephones, takes messages, performs any related data entry, gives reports, reprints reports, makes photocopies, faxes reports, and files orders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training program OR one (1) year of prior acceptable experience in laboratory technique covering at least fifty percent (50%) of the clinical duties required in the job.
Experience
  • Up to one (1) year of experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge and skill in phlebotomy and customer service.
  • Required to comply with OSHA regulations for N95 respirator training and fit testing.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and guidelines appropriate for the work area.
  • Practices proper hand hygiene and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate.
