Job summary

Talentify seeks a Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy duties across the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services. You will collect specimens, label tubes correctly, prioritize STAT draws, and ensure timely transport while using computers to complete tasks.

Under supervision, you will train new employees and student interns, follow safety and infection control policies, maintain equipment and supplies, and provide respectful patient care in a professional environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Phlebotomy training completed or at least 1 year of lab technique experience.
  • Knowledge of phlebotomy and customer service.
  • OSHA regulations for N95 training and fit testing required.
  • Adherence to infection control policies and PPE usage.
  • Hand hygiene and safe work practices expected.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
  • Identifies patients and labels specimen tubes correctly.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws.
  • Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens for testing.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Helps co-workers and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure orderly workflow.
  • Under supervision, helps train new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties.
  • Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Attends required safety training and understands related hazards.
  • Follows Hospital Exposure Control Plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
  • Maintains professional environment with respect for patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Promotes teamwork and effective working relations within department.
  • Greets patients and handles outpatient lab phones when required.
  • Responsible for daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness.
  • Records daily refrigerator temperatures in phlebotomy areas.
  • Performs pre-analytical functions including collection, labeling, transport, processing, and Drug Screens.
  • Assists in keeping supplies stocked.
  • Completes daily workload logs and related data entry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Overview

The Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws.
  • Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens for testing.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly workflow.
  • Under supervision, helps in the training of new employees and student interns in the performance of phlebotomy duties.
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.
  • Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Responsibly follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Greets patients and answers phones in the outpatient lab when required.
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
  • Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload.
  • Performs various pre-analytical functions of specimens (collection, labeling, transport, processing), including Custody and Control Drug Screens.
  • Assists in keeping supplies at stock level.
  • Completes daily log sheets.
  • Answers telephones, takes messages, performs related data entry, gives reports, reprints reports, makes photocopies, faxes reports, and files orders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training program OR one (1) year of prior acceptable experience in laboratory technique covering at least fifty percent (50%) of the clinical duties required in the job.
Experience
  • Up to one (1) year of experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge and skill in phlebotomy and customer service.
  • Required to comply with OSHA regulations for N95 respirator training and fit testing.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and guidelines appropriate for the work area.
  • Practices proper hand hygiene and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate.
