Job summary

Mercy Medical Center Merced is seeking a Phlebotomist to competently collect blood and other patient specimens for diagnostic testing, ensuring comfort and safety. You will identify patients, explain procedures, and perform venipunctures with precision, using proper labeling and specimen handling.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required at hire.
  • Phlebotomist certification (CA) required at hire.
  • BLS/CPR certification required at hire.
  • Preferred: 1 year phlebotomy experience in a clinical hospital laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood and patient specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Explain procedures and obtain proper patient identification.
  • Perform venipunctures and label/prepare specimens for analysis.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a professional appearance in the lab.
  • Coordinate with laboratory staff to prioritize and process specimens.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Phlebotomist, you will competently collect blood and other patient specimens for diagnostic testing, ensuring comfort and safety.

Every day you will identify patients, explain procedures, proficiently perform venipunctures, and accurately label/prepare specimens for laboratory analysis, adhering to safety protocols.

To be successful, you will demonstrate exceptional technical proficiency, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal skills for accurate diagnostics and patient satisfaction.

  • Displays competence and success with all ages and conditions of patients. Uses proper patient identifiers and aseptic technique. Has good rapport with patients and loved ones to obtain 'strongly agree' response on patient surveys.
  • Displays working knowledge of lab computer systems. Collects, receives and properly prepares specimens for testing in-house and to other facilities. Processes specimens from other facilities with accuracy. Prioritizes well.
  • Displays ability to prepare and complete Rounds within established time frames. Has good rapport with other hospital staff to accomplish goals. Prioritizes well with Stat, Urgent and Timed draws.
  • Works well with Laboratory Clerks to prioritize and accomplish goals. Displays ability to overcome obstacles to reduce patient waiting time. Maintains Waiting Room and Draw Station for a professional appearance. Displays understanding and flexibility to accomplish daily goals. Overcomes obstacles such as high volume and short staffing. Takes breaks and meals with lab goals in mind. Attends staff meetings. Displays respect and support for senior staff and management. Works well with coworkers and helps new employees. Attendance issues are within standards. Adapts well to change.
  • Answering the question before it needs to be asked' by providing detailed verbal, written and computer communication.
  • Provides/obtains detailed Shift Report. Takes initiative to provide useful information. Takes 'ownership' of shift.

  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire
Preferred
  • One year experience in phlebotomy in a clinical hospital laboratory

Please be advised that this location requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire. This ongoing competency is required through resources internal to the facility; outside RQI competency resources are not acceptable for CommonSpirit Health compliance requirements.
