Job summary

APLA Health is seeking a Phlebotomist at the Long Beach Center to collect blood, prepare specimens, and coordinate with the lab for timely testing while greeting patients respectfully in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include venipuncture, specimen labeling, data entry, shipping, and assisting in lab operations; CA CPT 1 certification and CPR are required, with travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • State CA CPT 1 certification.
  • CPR certification.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience.
  • Proven track record in providing exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups.
  • Analyze blood specimens using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.
  • Perform in house CLIA‑waived tests.
  • Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis.
  • Collect specimens for drug screens, alcohol tests, etc.
  • Perform data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Process billing information.
  • Prepare specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients.
  • Call patients that require repeat testing of unsatisfactory specimens.
  • Complete CMRs for positive STI results for primary care patients.
  • Provide superior customer service: greet patients in a courteous manner, respond with empathy and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Show professionalism and inspire confidence from patients and visitors at all times.
  • Maintain neat appearance, observe dress code, and always wear lab coat (or approved apron/gown) and name tag.
  • Assist other laboratory personnel as workload permits without being requested.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff members as requested.
  • Build positive working relationships with all coworkers.
  • Communicate with commercial laboratories regarding specimen questions.
  • Clean and maintain all laboratory equipment used in drawing and testing of blood specimens.
  • Order laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary.
  • Travel to additional sites when needed.

Position Summary

Under the Nursing Manager, the Phlebotomist will complete tasks including patient and specimen collection, packing and shipping of specimen, preparing samples in a safe and skillful manner. This work requires sensitivity, accuracy and confidentiality. The lab experiences high volumes of patients of all ages, so the candidate must be comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment. Daily duties include reviewing appointment lists, preparing the draw station, greeting patients, and gathering all samples requested by the patient’s health care provider. Labeling all vials and containers properly for transportation to the testing lab is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • State of CA certification CPT 1.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist.
  • CPR certification.
  • Proven track record in providing exceptional customer service.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Comfortable working under minimal supervision.
Knowledge
  • Demonstrates competence in all procedures required of a phlebotomist in accordance with institutional policies; with particular emphasis on blood samples, blood cultures, referral tests and specimen requirement.
  • Familiar with infection control policies and procedures.
Ability To
  • Understand standard blood drawing practices and procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Able to stand on feet, bend, and move throughout shift.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

This is primarily an office position that requires only occasional bending, reaching, stooping, lifting and moving of office materials weighing 25 pounds or less. The position requires daily use of a personal computer and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work related purposes. COVID vaccination is required and APLA Health will consider accommodations for disability‑ and religious‑based reasons.
