Job summary

Colusamedcenter is seeking a Phlebotomist to join the Laboratory team. You will perform phlebotomy for inpatients, outpatients, and external facilities, handle specimen labeling and processing, and assist with billing and reports. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential to collaborate with technologists and nursing staff.

You must hold a California CPT license and a current BLS card. The role involves interacting frequently with patients and staff and may require commuting

Responsibilities

  • Communicate test orders, results, and pertinent information to staff and supervisors.
  • Provide confidential, accurate patient care and assist training of new staff.

POSITION TITLE: Phlebotomist
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
EMPLOYEE REPORTS TO: Director of Laboratory Services
SUPERVISES: N/A
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time, Part-time
POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of tasks ranging from receiving patients in the laboratory to the processing of charts for HIMS, performing phlebotomy for inpatients and outpatients and outside facilities. It requires organizational ability in order to record information necessary for the reports required, inform the technologist of the tests ordered needing special attention on a basis other than routine, perform phlebotomist’s duties and be responsible for the billing of laboratory procedures and faxing lab reports when applicable. Must work with other phlebotomists, student aides, and technologists. Will have frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nursing personnel, HIMS personnel, and salespersons. Will be responsible for communicating any pertinent information to the laboratory staff and director.

Requirements
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Must be California CPT licensed. Must have a current BLS card. Must have the ability to organize a workload, communicate with others, type and possess some computer skills, must have mathematical skills, have legible handwriting, be familiar with medical terminology and able to learn laboratory terminology without difficulty. Must be flexible as the work involves many interruptions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specimen collection:
  1. Phlebotomy skills (to include therapeutic phlebotomy).
  2. Venipuncture/finger stick.
  3. Labeling, Processing and distribution of specimen.
  4. Interpret physician orders and collect appropriate samples.
  5. Prepare request slips correctly.
  6. Schedule out patients when appropriate.
  7. Relay tests request to technologist.
  8. Quest send outs / supplies / invoices.
Results Reporting:
  1. Distribute test results to the nursing station.
  2. Distribute test results to physician's /ordering providers
  3. Call or fax results when appropriate.
Clerical Detail:
  1. Enter Laboratory orders into US.
  2. Maintain daily accession log. OP number / drop off specific number.
  3. Order supplies when necessary to maintain stock.
  4. Maintain a clean, well-stocked laboratory- (collection trays, drawing chair, pipettes, glassware).
  5. Filing and shredding as necessary.
  6. File results to charts and Medical Records, including micro or send outs.
Contribute to Laboratory and Hospital Function:
  1. Practice confidentiality at all times.
  2. Consult resource persons when needed.
  3. Remain calm in stressful situations.
  4. Complete assignments in timely manner.
  5. Communicate all pertinent information to supervisor or co-workers.
  6. Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  7. Assist in training of new employees.
  8. Demonstrate flexibility in accepting assignments/changes.
  9. Interact in harmonious manner with all staff.
