Job summary

UPMC Harrisburg is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Senior to join our team. The position includes rotating daylight and evening shifts and involves assisting with the preparation and delivery of medications for patients in a fast-paced environment.

Filling medication orders, sterile product preparation, cytotoxic and hazardous drug handling, and responsible distribution are key duties. You will also train other technicians and maintain accurate controlled-substance records.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited technician program; 3 years of previous pharmacy technician experience.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
  • PA State Board of Pharmacy registration required for PA locations.

Responsibilities

  • Fill medication orders with correct labeling, counting and stocking; initial and date products.
  • Prepare sterile products and TPN solutions with aseptic technique.
  • Prepare cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g. chemotherapy) with proper aseptic technique.
  • Distribute medications including cassettes, emergency carts, and controlled substances per policy and state/federal requirements.
  • Maintain accurate controlled substance records and supervise distribution processes.

Pay scale: $20.45 - $30.68

Responsibilities
  • Filling: Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
  • Filling: Possesses the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing TPN (Total Parentral Nutrition) solutions with a high level of skill and expertise. Demonstrates understanding of the calculations involved in nutritional solution preparation.
  • Filling: Consistently has the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g. chemotherapy) using proper aseptic technique with a high level of skill and expertise.
  • Distribution: Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements
  • Distribution: Retrieve medications that have been discontinued and return (and credit if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.
  • Distribution: Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during medication distribution process.
  • Investigational: Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
  • General: Demonstrate a high level of accuracy and skill in maintaining controlled substance records and the distribution process for controlled substances.
  • General: Assist in training other Pharmacy Technicians in determining their ability to function in ALL areas of the Pharmacy department.
  • General: Provide and received information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
  • General: Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations. Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances. Assure that all such drugs are stored and dispensed in compliance with Federal, State, and Department Regulations
  • General: Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
  • General: Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
  • General: Maintain all pertinent documentation as required. This may include eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs etc. Maintain all patient information and records. Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required.
  • General: Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on daily basis in applicable areas such pharmacy medication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.
  • General: Maintain and update automated med stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
  • General: Participate in departmental quality improvement activities in order to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.
  • General: Provide direction and leadership for ALL technical aspects associated with medication preparation in the pharmacy department.
  • Assist in coordinating daily activities, organizing duties and responsibilities, and developing the workflow of the technical staff to maximize productivity in MULTIPLE areas.
  • General: Demonstrate competency in performing high skill level activities in MULTIPLE areas such as sterile products/IV admixtures, controlled substances, robot operation, packaging operations, and operating room.
  • General: Prepare reports as required to support pharmacy activities.
  • General: Perform and document regular cleaning and maintenance activities of ALL areas. Perform assigned job responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • General: Demonstrate a service orientation toward patients, staff and visitors. Conveys a positive, professional image at all times.
  • General: Demonstrate a high level of knowledge understanding the laws associated with the purchasing and distribution of controlled substances.

Qualifications
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent or Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program AND Three years of previous pharmacy technician experience Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • Act 34
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required
  • PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locations
  • If working in a New York facility, must also be registered with the New York State Board of Pharmacy
  • If an individual has a Pharmacy Intern license, they do not need to register with the State of PA
  • RxPartners specific BU criteria require Driver's License and Automotive insurance
  • Registration is dependent on the state they work in
