Qualifications

Overview

Join Our Healthcare Team at UPMC Presbyterian Campus! Are you a pharmacy technician looking for a new opportunity? As an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, you will work with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care in inpatient and Operating Room (OR) settings. Pharmacy technicians provide critical support in the preparation, filling, and distribution of medications to help ensure high standards of patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Pharmacy operations and compliance: perform pharmacy calculations, manage medication dosage forms, assess patient labels, set up IV doses, perform sterile IV compounding (including hazardous medications), ensure USP and USP compliance, and stay current with state and federal pharmacy laws.
  • Inventory and perioperative workflows: manage inventory and support perioperative workflows, including training of new staff members.
  • Filling: assist in filling medication orders with correct labeling, counting, and stocking; prepare appropriate oral and injectable medications (including intravenous admixtures and TPN) for correct patients at the correct times using proper technique.
  • Distribution: participate in medication distribution, including cassettes, emergency carts, and delivery of controlled substances per policy and regulatory requirements; retrieve discontinued medications and return them to the appropriate area.
  • General: maintain accurate records for controlled substances, ensure compliance with federal, state, and department regulations, and maintain required documentation (eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs, etc.).
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, plus one of the following:
    • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program
    • Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience
    • Six months of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant within the UPMC Health System
    • Enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program and in good standing
  • EPIC experience preferred
  • PTCB or ExCPT preferred
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration is required for all PA locations. If working in a New York facility, certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy program (CPhT) and registration with the New York State Board of Pharmacy are required.
