The Pharmacy Technician, under the direction of a pharmacist, delivers medications, performs unit dose activities such as filling patient medication orders and cassettes, updates ADT, manages floor stock orders, outpatient prescriptions, performs routine medication area inspections, maintains records for controlled substances, and utilizes the pharmacy computer system. The technician also assumes IV/Admixture responsibilities, including labeling pre-mixed solutions, restocking and ordering solutions and supplies, preparing large and small volume parenterals, parenteral nutrition solutions, irrigations, anti-neoplastic solutions, and extemporaneous compounds. Performs administratively assigned duties.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Fills medications and IV orders from computer-generated labels, updates patient cassette drawers, exchanges cassette drawers, delivers medications to and retrieves medications from patient care areas, or uses the pneumatic tube system when appropriate. Credits returned patient medications.
  2. Answers telephone and manages visitor interactions appropriately. Involves other pharmacy staff when needed. Directs drug information questions to a pharmacist, communicates courteously and professionally, and relays pertinent information to the next shift.
  3. Prepares prepackaged medications under pharmacist supervision, maintains logs, and completes tasks within the shift.
  4. Prepares parenteral, admixture, anti-neoplastic, and Home IV Therapy orders, including extemporaneous compounds, under pharmacist supervision using proper aseptic technique. Maintains logs and completes tasks within the shift.
  5. Keeps work area clean, maintains appropriate stock levels, and ensures a tidy workspace.
  6. Reviews, fills, delivers nursing floor stock and controlled substances; performs medication area inspections; prepares outpatient prescriptions according to laws; maintains narcotic inventory in the CD Module, restocks, and processes returns.
  7. Delivers or retrieves medications as deemed necessary by the supervising pharmacist.
  8. Performs activities related to the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), including filling medication orders and cassettes, and crediting medications.
  9. Completes and maintains IV/Admixtures lab and departmental competencies.
  10. Uses effective interpersonal communication skills while maintaining confidentiality and addressing staff and patients in a professional manner.
  11. Performs routine activities with minimal supervision, offers help when needed, and participates in training new employees.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:

Walking and standing for up to eight hours daily, with continuous fingering, handling, grasping, and twisting. Frequently lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds, climbing stairs, and occasional pushing or pulling up to 200 pounds. Repetitive reaching, bending, crouching, and neck movements. Good hearing and vision are required for communication and task performance.

Education:

High school diploma with courses in math and science.

Training and Experience:

At least six months of hospital pharmacy experience preferred. Successful completion of on-the-job training in each department area within six months of employment.

Work Shift:

First, second, and third shifts as scheduled, including every third weekend.
