Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Medication History Pharmacy Technician to systematically interview patients and caregivers to compile a complete home medication list. The role collaborates with pharmacists and the medical team to document findings and communicate important medication information.

The technician will rotate across areas such as Central, OR, and Sterile compounding, training others and improving workflows while ensuring safe distribution of medications.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be a Registered Technician or Pharmacy Intern with MA Board of Pharmacy and PTCB certified or Mass internship license.
• Knowledge of standard pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations and symbols; familiarity with handling controls.
• At least 1 year of Pharmacy experience including sterile compounding or retail.
• Experience with electronic medical records preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interview patient/family to obtain a complete home medication list.
• Document findings in medical records and share with medical team and pharmacy staff.
• Work across multiple Pharmacy areas (Central, OR, Sterile, Infusion, etc.).
• Serve as primary trainer for area and manage training materials.
• Suggest workflow improvements and support safe, timely medication distribution.

The medication history pharmacy technician, under the supervision of the medication history pharmacist, will systematically interview the patient, family, and/or caregiver to obtain a complete list of home medications. This medication list will then be confirmed with a second source that may include a pharmacy, mail order, or nursing facility documentation. Following completion, the pharmacy technician will document findings in the medical record and communicate pertinent medication information with the medical team, nursing staff and pharmacy staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Must have one of the following: Works in three different areas within the Pharmacy in addition to primary work area:

• Central
• Operating Room
• Sterile compounding (IV Room)
• Hazardous medication compounding (Infusion Center)
• Research
• Receiving
• Outpatient Pharmacy
• Quality Assurance
• Informatics

Excellence and Specialization In One Area As Demonstrated By

• Serving as primary trainer for that area including management of training materials
• Taking additional responsibility for at least one process (e.g. gloved fingertip and media fill sampling, compounding and repackaging, TraySafe workflows, satellite inventory control, DSCSA compliance, etc.)
• Suggests workflow efficiencies and collaborates with the Lead Technicians and management to help implement new practices
• In conjunction with other Pharmacy Technicians, ensures that all medication distribution functions are completed in a safe and timely manner. Informs Pharmacist and/or the Supervisor of any workflow issues.
• Repackages and compounds medications as needed, in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Maintains appropriate inventory levels in specific area of practice by rotating stock, checking for expired medications, informing the Pharmacy Buyer when inventory levels are low, and checking in wholesaler order.
• Answers telephone calls, triaging requests and taking steps to resolves questions received or concerns and problems.
• Actively participates in continuous performance improvement activities of the department, including providing suggestions on how to improve day-to-day operations.
• Helps the Pharmacists ensure that the Pharmacy has the right amount of stock to meet patient needs.
• Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

• Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and LC.
• Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must be a Registered Technician or Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and PTCB certified or a Pharmacy student in good standing with Mass. internship license.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Knowledge of standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing and dispensing of medications. Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to handling and distribution of controlled substances and hazardous materials preferred. Experience with electronic medical records preferred.

Experience: At least one year of Pharmacy experience including sterile compounding and/or retail experience.

Pay Range

$27.56 - $37.10

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
