Under the direction of the Pharmacy management team, this position is responsible for managing daily activities related to compliance with USP <795>, USP <797>, and USP <800> standards, as well as MA Board of Registration in Pharmacy regulations at UMass Memorial Health Care Community Hospitals' Pharmacy Departments. Presents Personnel Monitoring (PM) and Environmental Monitoring (EM) findings/reports and develops recommendations for corrective actions. Develops sterile and non-sterile compounding training in collaboration with management. Provides education on sterile and non-sterile compounding operations, IV retraining, and Environmental Monitoring remediation.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs, tracks, and monitors Personnel Monitoring (PM) in accordance with USP <797> regulations for all assigned pharmacy employees. Develops recommendations for corrective action plans. Presents findings and recommendations to Pharmacy management.
  • Performs, tracks, and monitors Environmental Monitoring (EM) in accordance with USP <797> and USP <800> regulations for all assigned pharmacy sterile compounding facilities. Develops recommendations for corrective actions. Presents findings and recommendations to Pharmacy management.
  • Coordinates and performs IV retraining and Environmental Monitoring remediation based on corrective action plans.
  • Develops and plans sterile and non-sterile compounding training and monitoring activities at assigned pharmacies in collaboration with management.
  • Serves as the principal trainer and educator for sterile compounding operations at assigned pharmacies.
  • Develops and maintains a Quality Assurance Plan for sterile compounding activities to ensure control across all sterile compounding facilities.
  • Provides sterile compounding PM and EM report outs to Infection Control Committees at intervals determined by management.
  • Provides guidance on facility design, workflow, policies, procedures, and documentation for sterile compounding.
  • Tracks compliance with IV room documentation and follows up on missed or incomplete documentation.
  • Builds and validates compounding records for batch documentation as needed.
  • Participates in evaluating Quality Control Reports and Data from 503B vendors.
  • Prepares for regulatory visits and serves as a resource during inspections.
  • Recommends nursing education for USP <797> compliance.
  • Recommends supplies for IV rooms and monitors par levels with the Pharmacy Purchasing Coordinator.
  • Communicates procedural changes and best practices to pharmacy staff.

  • Follows departmental policies, attends meetings, demonstrates Quality Improvement, and complies with health and safety regulations.
  • Respects diverse views, demonstrates professionalism, maintains reliable attendance, and performs related duties as required.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician License in MA
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Compounding Sterile Preparation Technician Certification
  • Valid state driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or higher in a science field
  • 503A Qualified Persons Certification
  • Additional certification in environmental and media monitoring

Experience/Skills:

  • 3 years hospital pharmacy experience with 2 years in Sterile Compounding
  • Progressive responsibilities in pharmacy
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Transportation to travel between hospitals

Preferred: Previous lead/supervisory experience.
