Job Overview
The Pharmacy Technician assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist by performing the technical, clerical, and manipulative tasks involved in dispensing, preparing, and distributing all medications and pharmaceutical products for patients of all ages—including geriatrics, adults, adolescents, pediatric, and neonatal. All work and performance must conform to written established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation and dispensing of medications under the supervisor’s guidance.
- Perform technical, clerical and manipulative tasks involved in dispensing, preparing, and distributing medications.
- Conform to company policies and procedures, including safety and infection control guidelines.
- Maintain the clean room and operate compounding equipment (BAXA, TPN compounder, label, delivery, and Zebra printers).
- Stage medications and supplies for compounding, prepare IV admixtures in a timely manner.
- Write QA logs, record discrepancies, and maintain documentation in Simplifi.
- Support inventory management: maintain adequate drug stock, place orders, and complete end‑of‑month counts and online count forms.
- Assist with troubleshooting departmental equipment, including TPN compounder and printers.
- Follow USP 800 guidelines and handle hazardous and chemotherapy drugs safely.
- Properly package deliveries, dispose of hazardous waste, and ensure proper shipping documentation.
- Follow clean‑room protocols—dress appropriately, keep the room clean, and continuously improve room quality.
- Participate in committees, attend mandatory in‑services, and comply with all safety and infection control protocols.
- Complete all required departmental forms (e.g., oath, lend/borrow, narcotic, rental, time‑off, payroll).
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Manager.
Qualifications
- High‑school graduate or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred.
- Pharmacy Technician Certified (PTCB) or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 1 year of pharmacy experience.
- Successful completion of all orientations.
- Knowledge of BAXA and TPN compounding, clean‑room maintenance, and operation.
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy calculations, generic‑brand name relationships, IV admixture properties, stability, chemical formulas, abbreviations, and conversions.
- Demonstrated awareness of technician limitations, safety, and infection control requirements.
- Strong communication skills—able to report discrepancies and coordinate with management.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, respond to short‑notice schedule changes, arrive on time, and support team collaboration.
