Job summary

Fred Hutch in Seattle is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Apprentice to join its clinical pharmacy team. This role offers on-the-job training and classroom instruction, preparing the apprentice for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and Washington State CPhT registration.

Qualifications

  • Enroll in Pharmacy Technician training program at North Seattle College after hire.
  • Pass the National Exam for Certified Pharmacy Technician within 90 days after completing the academic program.

Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, it is the only National Cancer Institute‑designated cancer center in Washington.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Pharmacy Technician Apprentice to join our clinical pharmacy team. The role provides on‑the‑job training and classroom instruction as part of a 12‑ to 24‑month apprenticeship, preparing the apprentice for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and eventual Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) registration through the Washington State Pharmacy Commission.

Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients at the pharmacy window, responding promptly to inquiries and following up on issues.
  • Operate specific pharmacy systems, including Point of Sale (POS), and maintain inventory to ensure no expired medications are stocked.
  • Enter prescription orders accurately into the pharmacy system, including proper billing.
  • Prepare, package, and label medication efficiently.
  • Handle charging and billing functions.
  • Operate CII safe and follow all controlled substance procedures.
  • Fill and document orders on Pyxis, manage emergency/code boxes, and maintain code trays.
  • Monitor stock for expiration dates and remove outdated items.
  • Reconcile medications.
  • Deliver patient‑specific medications to infusion or other clinic areas.
  • Use proper aseptic technique during IV admixture preparation.
  • Perform other pharmacy‑related duties in accordance with Washington State Pharmacy Commission regulations.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Obtain Washington State Pharmacy Assistant License within 30 days of hire.
  • Enroll in the Pharmacy Technician training program at North Seattle College promptly after hire.
  • Pass the National Exam for Certified Pharmacy Technician within 90 days of completing the academic program.
  • Familiarize yourself with generic drug names and basic indications during training.
  • Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Use a computer mouse, navigate software, and enter data accurately and efficiently.
  • Communicate verbally, over the phone, and in writing clearly, concisely, and professionally.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
Additional Information

Pre‑employment drug screening is required for all pharmacy department hires. The hourly pay range is $27.01 to $38.45, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H‑1B visas at this time, but candidates with an existing H‑1B visa may be eligible.
