Job summary

Carilion Clinic is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician for the medication history program at its Roanoke facility. This role supports BPMH for admitted patients and collaborates with pharmacy staff to ensure accurate medication lists for clinical decision-making.

Open Pharmacy Technician II position with a structured career ladder, day/evening shifts, and a sign-on bonus up to $12,500 for new hires who are ready to obtain VA registry. Prior hospital experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course preferred.
• Completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire.
• 1 to 2 years of pharmacy experience required.
• Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required.
• Pharmacy Technician Certified Board Certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Must be familiar with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and maintain accuracy.
• Must be customer service oriented.
• Knowledge/use of general office equipment incl. computer/keyboard.
• Must be able to solve simple mathematical/logistical problems and budget time.

Tier assignment will be determined at the time of hire based on the candidate’s experience as a pharmacy technician and experience in relevant practice setting. Our pharmacy-led medication history program contributes to an important goal for Carilion: the completion of a Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) for every admitted patient. This is a critical part of patient care, so that our providers may begin clinical decision-making with the most accurate medication list upon patient admission.

In this role, you will work along-side your medication history technician colleagues and also have peripheral oversight from a medication history pharmacist. Skills required include a positive‑attitude, the ability to converse well with patients, a keen attention to detail, baseline knowledge of medications, an inquisitive mind, and drive to succeed. We are hoping to expand our program to positively impact more patients and are looking for dedicated technicians who are seeking a career in medication history.

What We Require

• Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred.
• Successful completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire.
• Experience: 1 to 2 years of pharmacy experience required.
• Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required.
• Pharmacy Technician Certified Board Certification relevant to work area is required within 6 months of hire.
• Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focused on attention to detail/accuracy.
• Must be customer service oriented.
• Requires knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard.
• Must be able to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment.
• Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.

Compensation Range: $21.61 - $30.25. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
