Under the supervision of a pharmacist, performs hazardous and nonhazardous sterile compounding, medication delivery, refilling and loading medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs), packaging, preparation of oral and IV medications, record keeping, and handling controlled substances with proper documentation. Assists with transportation and handling of controlled substances and related documentation.

Maintains 50% of time performing sterile compounding activities and specialized tasks, including MAR message management, code cart management, controlled substance reconciliation, and medication ordering.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares IV drugs using aseptic technique, including parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other IV drugs.
  2. Maintains documentation per regulatory and hospital standards, respecting patient confidentiality, and generating necessary pharmacy reports.
  3. Performs all responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  4. Ensures compliance with all state and federal standards for medication compounding.
  5. Prepares sterile parenteral products based on patient orders, including additives, volume, and concentration, for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.
  6. Prepares batch sterile compounded products for high-use items.
  7. Maintains inventory and orders supplies needed for sterile compounding.
  8. Maintains certification standards in aseptic technique.
  9. Proficient with pharmacy technology and equipment, including compounding systems.
  10. Documents compounded products using appropriate technology (e.g., Simplify, Epic, IMS).
  11. Supports training of new technicians in sterile compounding and other tasks.
  12. Performs monthly air and surface sampling as appropriate.
  13. Demonstrates proper behavior in ISO classified environments (handwashing, garbing, aseptic technique).
  14. Monitors and documents temperature/humidity and pressure in relevant areas.
  15. Uses and maintains primary engineering controls properly.
  16. Inspects areas and removes outdated medications and supplies.
  17. Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

  5. Maintains patient confidentiality.

  8. Ensures all licenses and certifications are current.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified by PTCB or ExCPT.
  • Must pass and remain competent with UMass sterile compounding program following USP 797/800 standards.

Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in math, computer skills, and following instructions accurately.
  • Positive work ethic, motivated, professional demeanor, and teamwork skills.
