Overview

Job Summary:

Manages pharmacy technicians and various operations of the department. This position will primarily deal with medication reconciliation.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

• Uses aseptic technique to accurately prepare IV medications.
• Refills Pyxis accurately, including pulling correct medication from stock, appropriate quantity, complying with check-off procedures, and correctly placing products in nursing Pyxis—verifying quantities and expiration dates.
• Checks in daily medication orders and appropriately processes items and invoices. Is aware of processes for missing items or special order items. Ensures all medications are properly stored.
• Assists with quality management as directed: current unit inspections, PI projects, area cleaning, processing out-of-date medications, crash cart inspections.
• Accurately labels and/or packages medications, including patient-specific items, unit dosing, and compounding.
• Makes timely deliveries of medications to patient care areas.
• Answers the phone courteously and directs calls as appropriate.
• Assists with training new employees.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Certification with PTCB required.
• Registration: Must be registered with AL State Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
• Experience: Three years of hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred—experience at DMH is advantageous. Trained in all DMH inpatient pharmacy technician areas is preferred.
