Job summary

Pueblo of San Felipe Health Clinic seeks a dedicated pharmacy technician to serve residents of San Felipe Pueblo. The incumbent ensures the patient’s drug therapy is followed, acts as patient advocate, and coordinates care with healthcare providers.

Under supervision of lead Pharmacist, duties include assisting with QA activities, vaccine administration, data entry in RPMS/EHR, inventory management, and billing processes.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent and completion of a certified Pharmacy Technician training program.
• Knowledge of NM RPMS, EHR systems, and MS Office (Access, Word, Excel).
• 3+ years of certified pharmacy technician experience.
• Bilingual abilities (Spanish and English) preferred.

Job Summary

This is a community-based position that services residents of San Felipe Pueblo.The incumbent acts as a patient advocate by ensuring that the patient’s prescribed drug therapy is followed as prescribed. Meet patients’ medical, social and personal needs related to their pharmacy care plan. Coordinate patients’ prescribed pharmacy care with their healthcare providers to ensure that drug therapy is successful.

Essential Duties

• Under the direction and supervision of the lead Pharmacist or designee assists with the coordination of the pharmacy program activities in accordance with the Pueblo of San Felipe Tribal Administration, the Health & Wellness department and the IHS P.L. 93-638 contract funding requirements. This includes helping with quality assurance activities, medication utilization evaluations and adverse drug reaction reporting and enhanced inventory management. Helps maintain the Pharmacy Department Safety Data Sheet (SDS) record book.
• This employee is a certified pharmacy technician who has completed a recognized certificate training course on appropriate immunization administration technique. This employee administers vaccines at community immunization clinics as well as in the pharmacy with the Pueblo of San Felipe Pharmacy Based Immunization Program. In order to administer vaccines, this employee maintains a cardiopulmonary resuscitation training certificate and completes immunization continuing education on an annual basis. This employee shall be permitted to administer vaccinations under the direct supervision and with the authorization of an immunizing pharmacist or other licensed provider when the immunizing pharmacist or other licensed provider has completed all of the requirements prior to administration of the vaccination. The immunizing pharmacist or other licensed provider is on the premises for post-immunization monitoring of the patient.
• As a pharmacy technician, the employee prepares medication for dispensing and administration. Under the supervision of licensed pharmacists, the employee performs pharmacy duties such as reading individual outpatient prescriptions, determining the kind, strength and container, counting or pouring correct amount of medication and typing the prescription label. Update data bases, prepare pre-packs. Organize, disinfect and clean pharmacy. Restock vials, bottles, bags and other supplies. Check inventory for expiry and stability. Cleans pharmacy counters, counting trays, bins and pharmacy shelving daily. Receive and store incoming orders. Answer questions from physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and other staff on availability of specific items based on knowledge and familiarity of articles stocked in the pharmacy. Other pharmacy duties as assigned and determined by the Chief Pharmacist or designee.
• When necessary, enters data into the computer accurately for proper prescription labels, assembling labels, verifying Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) data. Performs coding corrections through the RPMS and electronic health record (EHR) systems for the pharmacy department. Serves as a delegate for the pharmacist(s) at San Felipe Health Clinic Pharmacy for the New Mexico Prescription Monitoring Program (NMPMP). Performs searches and reviews through the Office of Inspection General List of Excluded Individuals and Entities and the General Services Administration (GSA) System for Awards Management (SAM) websites.
• Under the direction and supervision of the Lead Pharmacist or designee:
  • Documents pharmacy services in the appropriate section of the written PCC (Patient Care Component) form. Assists with the identification of medication errors and potential errors for safety, assists with medication error prevention and other pharmacy quality improvement activities.
  • Orders non-controlled medications and submits returns through the Pharmacy Prime Vendor. This employee helps compile the monthly prime vendor invoices as assigned. Compiles top dollar down and perpetual inventory reports as assigned. Assists with records from the Reverse Distributor processes. Assists with pharmacy wall to wall pharmacy inventories.
  • This employee assists with Pharmacy point of sale (POS) Billing. Processes claims, assures appropriateness of billing, runs various POS reports, reworks rejected claims and reverses claims when appropriate. This pharmacy performs prior authorizations. Other activities include compiling monthly reports, confirmation and updating of clients registration and insurance information. Identifying clients who need assistance with obtaining insurance. Assists with prior authorizations and resubmits. Assists with gathering documentation required for pharmacy audits.
• This employee closes out pharmacy visits in the Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) associated with the electronic health record (EHR).

Qualifications

• Education: HS Diploma or equivalent. Complete a certified Pharmacy Technician training program.

• Experience/Basic Knowledge:
• Knowledge of customs and mores of the San Felipe community and appreciation for the importance of traditional ways of lifestyle and language.
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about IHS RPMS and EHR computer system. Microsoft Access, Word and Excel software. Ability to enter computer data accurately and resolve minor computer system problems.
• Knowledge of the New Mexico Statewide Immunization System and New Mexico Prescription Monitoring Program.

• Required Licenses/Certifications: Possess a valid State or Government driver’s license and must have a valid New Mexico Pharmacy Technician Certificate and a national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certification. Maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate. Have 3 or more years of experience as a certified pharmacy technician.
• Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, and for a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
