Job description

Description

The Pharmacy Technician assists licensed pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory, and managing patient records. Working under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs technical functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations. This role does not include duties that are legally restricted to registered pharmacists.

Essential Functions:
  • Medication Preparation & Distribution
  • Procure and distribute medication orders per physician or pharmacist request according to established policies and protocols.
  • Accurately fill physician orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts, and stock requisitions.
  • Replenish medications in emergency drug containers and floor stock areas.
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations safely and accurately using aseptic technique.
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas on established schedules.
Inventory Management
  • Assist in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies.
  • Rotate stock to ensure medications are used before expiration dates.
  • Identify and remove outdated or unusable medications.
  • Restock medication and IV dispensing areas within specified time frames.
  • Repackage bulk medications into unit-dose packages accurately and safely.
Departmental Operations & Clerical Support
  • Pick up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas.
  • Enter charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
  • Generate reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
  • Answer telephones professionally, identify self and department, and direct calls appropriately.
  • Respond to urgent requests and make stat deliveries when needed.
  • Maintain logs, records, and documentation accurately.
  • Keep pharmacy areas clean, neat, organized, and equipment properly maintained.
Quality Improvement & Compliance
  • Complete and document monthly medication storage area inspections.
  • Collect data and participate in quality monitors as assigned.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, including HIPAA privacy standards.
  • Perform all duties under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
Professional Development
  • Maintain current pharmacy technician certification and New Mexico Board of Pharmacy registration.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and complete required competency assessments.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new team members.
Requirements
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • College courses in pharmacy, chemistry, or related fields are desirable.
Licensure & Certification:
  • Current New Mexico Board of Pharmacy Technician License (required).
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or equivalent) (required).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification preferred.
Experience:
  • 2–3 years of pharmacy technician experience in a hospital, retail, or clinical setting preferred.
  • New graduates or candidates with less experience may be considered depending on qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The Pharmacy Technician must have experience in 340B program operations, including patient eligibility review, inventory management, compliance auditing, contract pharmacy oversight, Medicaid duplicate discount prevention, and 340B reporting. The role requires proficiency in pharmacy information systems, EMR documentation, regulatory compliance, and data analysis to ensure program integrity and achieve cost savings.

  • May be exposed to hazardous medications; appropriate PPE must be used.
  • Punctual and dependable attendance is essential.
