Job summary

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to assist in preparing and dispensing prescriptions, prepackaging pharmaceuticals, and preparing sterile compounds as directed. The role requires knowledge of labeling and dispensing procedures and strong PC skills.

The technician will support pharmacists, access patient profiles and electronic health records, and help with charge documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in regulatory documentation and daily processes specific to area.
  • Maintains stock levels and informs supervisor of needs and shortages; cleans and maintains equipment/work area.
  • Accesses patient profiles and electronic health records as needed; participates in charge documentation.
  • Duties are general and may change; management reserves rights to adjust responsibilities.

Job Summary

To prepare and distribute routine dosage orders. Prepackage pharmaceuticals, and prepare sterile compounds as directed. To measure, mix, count, label, and record amounts of dosages and prescriptions. Assist pharmacist in the dispensing of prescriptions. Knowledge of procedures and standards for the labeling and dispensing of prescribed medications. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to sort, check, count, and verify numbers.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in the preparation and dispensing of prescriptions; counts, packages, and labels dosages. Prices and files prescriptions.
  • Adds measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) packs under supervision.
  • Participation in regulatory documentation and daily processes specific to area.
  • Maintains appropriate stock levels and informs supervisor of stock needs and shortages cleans and helps maintain equipment and work area per established procedures.
  • Accesses patient profiles and electronic health record as needed to accomplish assigned tasks participates in medication related charge documentation and submission activities.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional travelling to offsite locations, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)

Requirements

High school diploma/GED. Completion of a pre-employment drug screen required.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required

Pharmacy technician registration or Student-Controlled Substance Registration with the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy.
