About Duke HomeCare & Hospice
Pursue your passion for caring with Duke HomeCare & Hospice, which offers hospice, home health, and infusion services across the region, as well as serving as the home for the Duke Caregiver Support Program. Team members work closely with a patient's physician to provide comprehensive, individualized care in the comfort of their home or at our inpatient hospice facility in Durham, NC.

General Description of the Job Class
- This individual performs, under supervision, a variety of duties in accordance with department procedures, related to procurement, preparation, distribution, and storage of drugs, as well as clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication use.
- Individuals eligible for pharmacy technician level II are competent in all tasks associated with level I and have achieved advanced competency requirements. They must maintain certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).
- The IV room compounding Pharmacy Technician II prepares and compounds sterile admixtures, such as parental nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy, hydration, and narcotic analgesics, following legal and organizational policies, using aseptic techniques under supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
- Assist the Operations Pharmacist and IV Lead Technician in maximizing pharmacy efficiency and productivity.
- Prioritize filling orders for timely delivery, using color-coded bins.
- Facilitate order filling and ensure proper placement for pharmacist checking.
- Inform the Pharmacist of 'Stat' orders ready for checking.
- Pre-check compounding materials before entering the cleanroom.
- Verify prescription labels and compounding documents for accuracy, strength, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Calculate and verify compounding instructions for each patient order.
- Disinfect IV room surfaces before and after compounding.
- Follow gowning, gloving, and handwashing guidelines.
- Assist in the accurate compounding of intravenous medications following aseptic principles and USP guidelines.
- Perform batch compounding to optimize efficiency and minimize waste.
- Inspect final products for particulate matter and container integrity.
- Ensure TPN compounding and equipment are tested and calibrated.
- Maintain cleanliness of the cleanroom and related equipment per USP standards.
- Participate in routine cleaning and quality control activities, including environmental sampling and sterility testing.
- Manage supplies and inventory, including restocking and verifying received medications against invoices.
- Identify and dispose of expired or unusable medications properly.
- Report medication incidents and equipment errors as required.
- Support team members and serve as a training resource for new technicians.
- Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and standards, including HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
- Maintain a professional appearance and uphold safety and accreditation standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Pharmacy Tech I: High school diploma or equivalent, completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program, acceptance into pharmacy school, or high school diploma with equivalent experience.
- Pharmacy Tech II: Same as Tech I, plus one year of pharmacy or healthcare-related experience.
Experience
- Pharmacy Tech I: None required.
- Pharmacy Tech II: Minimum of one year related experience.
Licenses, Certifications
- Pharmacy Tech I: Must register with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy within 180 days.
- Pharmacy Tech II: Must be registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy and hold certification from PTCB or ExCPT.
