Job summary

UPMC Senior Communities in Pennsylvania is seeking a Pharmacy Technician I to join our pharmacy team. This full-time role covers day and night shifts with weekend/holiday rotation, supporting drug storage, distribution, labeling, and inventory under pharmacist supervision.

The position requires completion of a pharmacy technician program (or enrollment in an undergrad program) and PA State Board registration. A $5,000 sign-on bonus is offered for a 2-year commitment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program or enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program.
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience or as a technician assistant within the UPMC Health System.
  • PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration is required for PA locations.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately fills floor stock requests.
  • Prepare correct labeling for bulk drugs.
  • Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Interpret physician orders and distinguish orders across departments.
  • Maintain daily reports and perform monthly storage inspections.
  • Select drugs from stock as ordered under pharmacist supervision.
  • Handle aseptic technique for sterile products.
  • Repackage drugs into unit-of-use containers.

Job description

Pharmacy Technician I

Full-time, Day/Night Shift, (2) 8-hour shifts and (2) 12-hour shifts per week. Hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, 7:00 am - 7:30 pm, or 7:00 pm - 7:30 am. Every other weekend and on rotating holidays.

Purpose:

Responsible for the proper storage and distribution of drugs; receives and accounts for drugs coming from all vendors. Delivers medications to patient care and other areas; picks up drug returns and applicable paperwork; and puts all returned unit-dose products back to proper receipts. Responsible for filling patient drug boxes, floor stock orders, and automated dispensing cabinets. Assists Pharmacists as directed. Maintains daily report.

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately fills floor stock request.
  • Prepare correct labeling for bulk drugs.
  • Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Basic understanding of the concept of physical stability and chemical stability as it relates to parenteral pharmaceuticals.
  • Correctly interpret physician orders and can distinguish between pharmaceutical orders, laboratory tests, radiology, nursing, and other orders.
  • Perform monthly medication storage area inspections.
  • Selects drugs from stock in proper dose, dosage form, and quantity as ordered by the physician under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Understands microbial contamination and exhibits Aseptic Technique while preparing sterile pharmaceutical products.
  • Repackages drugs into a unit-of-use container.
Qualifications:
  • Education and Formal Training Required: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent required, and one of the following:
  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program
  • Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience
  • Six months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician Assistant or Trainee within the UPMC Health System
  • Enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program and in good standing
  • Experience Required: Must be familiar with a typewriter keyboard and demonstrate the ability by producing a neat, accurate, and legible copy.
  • The individual must have the ability to adapt to the computerized Pharmacy Information Systems utilized.
  • The individual must demonstrate initiative and good judgment.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration is required for all PA locations
