Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Trainee to support the pharmacy team. Under supervision, you will prepare unit-dose meds, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders while maintaining drug safety and accuracy.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma, state license, and possibly PTCB certification. Experience in hospital settings is favored, with hybrid work arrangements and competitive pay.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Pharmacy Technician [State License] required; PTCB preferred.
  • Previous hospital-related experience or formal training in pharmacy tech is desired.
  • Knowledge of dosages, accuracy, safety and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pharmaceutical dosage calculations for extemporaneous forms under pharmacist supervision.
  • Adhere to safety requirements for handling medications per policy and regulations.
  • Prepare unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions and stock orders as assigned.
  • Assist with training of Pharmacy Technician Trainees and maintain drug handling standards.

Job Summary SummaryUnder the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, the Pharmacy Technician Trainee follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders while maintaining the safe handling and integrity of medications. Tasks may also include participation in technical training and departmental projects. Staffing assignments may include roles throughout the central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas.

Does this position require Patient Care?NoEssential FunctionsPerform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms, as applicable, under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.Adhere to safety requirements for handling non-hazardous medications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique, distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control, or maintain code cart inventory. Responsibilities are unit-specific.Responsible for assisting with the training of Pharmacy Technician Trainees.Demonstrate familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Perform intermediate mathematical calculations associated with preparing non-sterile, extemporaneously manufactured pharmaceutical products and other medication doses.
  • Follow all applicable state and federal controlled substance regulations.
  • Continuously improve skills necessary for area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
  • Read, interpret, and follow complex verbal and written instructions to prepare medications accurately in a sterile environment.
