Overview
This regional Pharmacy Technician position is located in the Pharmacy department of the Hawai`i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua`i Region. The department supports inpatient medication management, procurement, storage, distribution, clinical services such as medication therapy management, patient counseling, medication reconciliation, and educational initiatives.
The role assists pharmacists in delivering pharmaceutical care. The position may require flexibility for evening, weekend, or holiday schedules, and travel within the region as needed.
Responsibilities
Assist pharmacists with:
- Safely dispensing medications for inpatients.
- Receiving and reading prescription and order orders, performing calculations, and preparing dosage units.
- Labeling, packing, and arranging medication for final professional review.
- Maintaining accurate inventory records and reporting.
- Providing patient counseling on medication use and adherence.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred (no education required).
- Valid certificate of registration as a registered pharmacy technician issued by the Board of Pharmacy, State of Hawai`i.
Experience
- One (1) year of work experience in a pharmacy setting (community pharmacy, hospital, or other medical institution) assisting a pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services in accordance with established procedures and methods.
- One (1) year of work experience assisting a licensed pharmacist in a hospital, which required receiving and reading prescription and medication orders, performing calculations to determine proper measurements, measuring, counting, packaging, labeling items, and arranging them for final professional review.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature and system of weights and measures.
- Familiarity with common pharmaceutical preparations, dosage requirements, routes of drug administration, and practices for filling prescriptions.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations and transcribe accurate medication profiles.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterile compounding procedures, and inventory management.
- Understanding of State and Federal pharmacy regulations, applicable hospital/unit policies, and procedures for providing pharmaceutical services.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Substitutions Allowed
- Completion of a pharmacy technician program from an accredited school or a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) may substitute for the required experience for the entry and six‑month full‑performance level.
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience for the entry and full‑performance level.

Certifications Preferred
