Job summary

Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC) Pharmacy Department is hiring a Pharmacy Technician to assist licensed pharmacists in dispensing and compounding drugs. The role includes preparing and labeling medications, verifying data from the electronic medical record, stocking drugs, and maintaining accurate dispensing records.

The position operates under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and requires NY State Pharmacy Technician licensure, with potential substitution for pharmacist

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession of a license to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
• Licensed as a Pharmacist in New York State or possession of a limited permit to practice as a Pharmacist in New York State may be substituted for the education and licensure.
• Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assists a licensed Pharmacist in compounding, preparing and labelling drugs used to fill patient medication orders.
• Retrieves prescription data from patient electronic medical record for verification of all information needed to fill a prescription by a licensed pharmacist prior to dispensing a prescription.
• Retrieves drugs from stock and returns them to stock.
• Prepares dosage units of drugs in appropriate containers to fill medication orders.
• Attaches prescription labels to containers.
• Prepares manual records of dispensing for the signature or initials of the licensed pharmacist.
• Handles and delivers completed medications to person authorized to act on behalf of the patient.
• Monitors medications and intravenous solutions for expiration dates and removes expired medications from all stock areas.
• Repackages medications into dispensing units.

HOURLY RANGE: $24.25 - $31.45

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves assisting licensed pharmacists in the dispensing and compounding of drugs in the Pharmacy Department at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent assists in compounding, preparing and labeling drugs used to fill patient medication orders. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Direct supervision includes the approval by a licensed pharmacist of all work performed by a Pharmacy Technician prior to the actual dispensing of any drug. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

• Assists a licensed Pharmacist in compounding, preparing and labelling drugs used to fill patient medication orders;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of healthcare facility pharmacy and pharmacy procedures, including drug compounding, drug/medication labelling, drug distribution, drug repackaging, intravenous admixture preparation and stock/supply activities; working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and accreditation standards as they relate to the profession of pharmacy technician in a healthcare facility; skill in making mathematical calculations; ability to maintain written records; ability to comprehend and follow direct and specific orders; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
