The primary purpose of the Pharmacy Technician is to support the Pharmacist in the inpatient and outpatient distribution of medications.
Job Specific
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician and include but are not limited to: (EF)
- Repackaging, labeling, compounding, handling and storing pharmaceuticals
- Processing charges for medications
- Using and maintaining equipment and facilities
- Restocking floor‑stock, crash carts and many types of specialty trays
- Documenting controlled substance distribution
- Controlling medication inventory and utilization of departmental resources
- Prepares sterile admixtures using current USP 797 standards and CMC pharmacy policies
- Uses appropriate pharmaceutical‑medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols common to the prescribing, dispensing, and charting of medications in the institution. (EF)
- Maintains a working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying medications that are light sensitive, requires refrigeration, or are caustic or poisonous. Is able to use reference books or website references for stability information as well as material safety data information. (EF)
- Carries out the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solution preparation. (EF)
- Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms. This includes the practice of aseptic technique, proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures (may include chemotherapy or other specialty solutions), preparation of the label and any control records, their proper technique for visual inspection of parenteral solutions, and the documentation of quality control. - Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees. (EF)
- Fills Pyxis and performs all aspects of Pyxis function. Performs Pyxis Quality Assurance as needed. (EF)
- Performs monthly Medication Area Inspections of all areas of the hospital and its system as assigned. (EF)
- Participates in the hospital’s safety, quality management and infection control programs. (EF)
- Performs billing procedures as required. Files patient records and other required paperwork as assigned. (EF)
- Performs general housekeeping duties in the pharmacy that includes counter cleaning, shelf dusting, cleaning of all compounding surfaces, cleaning of refrigerators and keeping all work areas clean. (EF)
- Answers telephone and takes appropriate action. (EF)
- Performs cash or other currency transactions for outpatient prescriptions. (EF)
Hospital
- Adheres to organization‑wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
- Day‑to‑day performance complies with the hospital’s Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
- Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
- Performs within the professional Scope of Practice at all times.

- Certified Pharmacy Technician, Texas State Board of Pharmacy Registered; must be obtained within 180 days of hire.
