Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - North Liberty Campus (Daytime)

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking full-time Pharmacy Technicians to join our North Liberty Campus. The new campus, opening in Spring 2025, will feature state-of-the-art facilities including a comprehensive outpatient, inpatient, and surgical care center, as well as a community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department. Under general pharmacist supervision, the pharmacy technician plays a vital role in supporting pharmacists and healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to inpatient and outpatient populations. Responsibilities include preparing and dispensing medications, managing inventory, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment; failure to do so will result in termination.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient and customer service, communicating effectively with the public, patients, and healthcare personnel.
  • Answer calls and triage as per policies.
  • Prepare medications and prescriptions for hospital, clinic, and community settings.
  • Accurately compound medications for inpatient, outpatient, and prescriptions, maintaining competencies in sterile and non-sterile preparation, and documenting quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain medication inventory, including restocking, reordering, and auditing for expired medications.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas and restock automated dispensing machines.
  • Maintain controls and security for controlled substances, including inventory and delivery records.
  • Generate and review records related to medication distribution, dispensing, and disposal.
  • Operate equipment such as laminar flow hoods, label printers, and automated dispensing systems.
  • Handle hazardous medications safely, including antineoplastic drugs and waste.
  • Assist with training new technicians.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with department policies.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire either a Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Certified, based on the candidate's qualifications. Please specify your preference in your application or indicate both.

Certified Technician Minimum Eligibility:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • National certification through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing education compliance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of post-high school experience and/or education in natural sciences, or completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program.

Trainee Technician Minimum Eligibility:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Must become certified within one year of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as above or completion of an accredited program.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in ratio/proportion calculations.
  • Retail pharmacy experience.
  • Inventory management experience.
  • Teamwork and detail-oriented skills.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based programs.
  • Healthcare experience with patient interactions, including challenging situations.
  • Desirable: Silver Level National Career Readiness Certificate.
