Job description

Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - IV Ads AM

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee to work in our Acute Care, IV Ads Pharmacy. This position operates under general pharmacist supervision, handling technical activities related to dispensing. It involves supporting development, coordination, and training within the assigned areas, with functional supervision as needed. The work hours are in the AM, ranging from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm, including every other weekend.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire either a Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Certified, depending on the candidate's qualifications. Please specify your preferred position(s) in your application.

Key Duties include:

  • Managing inventory in satellites and dispensing areas, including emergency supplies
  • Reviewing medication inventory for expired drugs
  • Maintaining medication levels according to established par levels
  • Managing inpatient Epic In-Baskets, including printing labels, preparing medications, and documenting activities
  • Delivering and returning medications within patient care areas
  • Ensuring medication security and proper storage, including controlled substances
  • Maintaining accurate records related to medication distribution and dispensing
  • Utilizing equipment such as laminar flow hoods, label printers, automated dispensing systems, etc.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and adhering to quality assurance protocols in sterile compounding
  • Compounding sterile and non-sterile products, including hazardous medications
  • Performing inspections and assisting with training of staff and students
  • Managing narcotics and controlled substances inventories
  • Refilling automated medication stations following proper procedures

Minimum Eligibility Requirements for Certified Technicians:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire
  • Certification through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing education compliance
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of post-high school experience and/or education in sciences OR completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program

Minimum Eligibility for Trainee Technicians:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire
  • Must become certified within one year
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience as above or completion of accredited training

Additional Qualifications:

  • Ability to calculate pharmaceutical ratios and proportions

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with inventory management and team environments
  • Attention to detail, computer skills, and healthcare experience involving patient interaction
