UPMC Mercy is hiring a Casual Pharmacy Technician, Associate to support our Inpatient Pharmacy. This position will work varied shifts primarily during the daylight, evening, and on weekends with 3 holidays per year and occasional night shifts. Pharmacy Technician career advancement and certification opportunity available through completion of a free on-line program.

Overview
The Pharmacy Technician, Associate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by assisting with the sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, medication filling, and medication distribution. The Pharmacy Technician, Associate services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
Responsibilities
- Filling: Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required. Prepare proper oral and injectable medications (including intravenous admixtures and TPN) for the correct patient and administration time. Use proper technique in medication preparation. Work in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy) using aseptic technique.
- Distribution: Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency carts, and delivery of controlled substances per policy and regulatory requirements. Retrieve discontinued medications and return/credit as needed. Develop and maintain positive service relationships during the distribution process. Assist in procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
- General: Provide and receive information to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists. Ensure safe and secure storage of medications according to regulations. Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked work environment. Practice proper hand hygiene. Use computer systems to process and maintain patient information and records. Maintain documentation (logs, inventories, etc.). Finalize sales and follow cash handling policies. Comply with federal/state laws (HIPAA, OSHA) and PBM contracting requirements. Maintain patient information and pharmacy systems. Manage inventory in pharmacy areas and automated systems. Assist in training pharmacy personnel and students. Demonstrate accuracy in controlled substance records and distribution; audit and maintain compliance with regulations. Participate in quality improvement activities.

Qualifications
- Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required AND one of the following: Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program; Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience; Six months experience as a Pharmacy Assistant within the UPMC Health System; Enrollment in a college program and in good standing.
