Job description

Under close supervision, fills routine orders for unit doses and prepackaged pharmaceuticals. The Pharmacy Technician counts, packages and labels unit doses for inspection by pharmacist and fills routine orders for non-prescription pharmaceuticals.

Responsibilities
  • General Duties
    • Understand the pharmacy workflow for medication returns and disposal, interpret medical abbreviations, identify medication orders (Scheduled, PRN, Once, STAT, Now), accurately interpret EPIC pharmacy labels, and ensure all work is reviewed by a Pharmacist.
    • Recognize and identify various classifications of medications, names, dosage forms and routes of administration; use available print and online references; appropriately label all dosage forms with auxiliary labels for expiration and storage; troubleshoot Pyxis equipment (failed drawers, inventory, outdates, discrepancies); and utilize technology in the pharmacy including Carousels, DoseEdge, Simplifi, Pyxis, and Prepackaging Systems.
    • Prepare non-sterile compounding and packaging; accurately draw up oral syringes and compound oral suspensions; recognize regulations for repackaging medications and comply with labeling and documentation procedures for non-sterile compounding and packaging; and be exposed to hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents and reproductive risk agents.
    • Answer phones, assist callers with missing medication, respond to Pyxis stockouts promptly, answer EPIC in‑basket messages, inventory and store supplies, process patient charges (including narcotic charges), and handle credits and returns for medication not used.
    • Exchange emergency carts and complete required documentation, maintain cleanliness of equipment and work areas, observe departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and adhere to safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
    • Know laws and regulations related to controlled substances, handle controlled substances securely and complete all required documentation; understand departmental QA processes; participate in committees and educational activities; and use Microsoft Office, fax, copy machines, and other office equipment as necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.
