Job summary

Parkland Health is seeking a pharmacy technician to support pharmacists and staff with preparing orders, packaging, labeling, and cashiering. This role includes clerical duties, inventory tracking, and maintaining records on a rotating shift.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, be familiar with pharmacy math, and demonstrate strong computer skills. Certification and state registration are preferred or required where applicable.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by exam is preferred.
• Current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy is required.

Responsibilities

• Follows established procedures to prepare and distribute medication orders under pharmacist supervision.
• Operates an electronic cash register, entering charges, collecting money and giving change.
• Prepares for each shift by loading cash into the register and ensuring the workstation is ready.
• Delivers cash receipts and reports to the manager after each shift and ensures secure accounting of funds.
• May assist in prescription order entry into the ambulatory pharmacy system.
• Assists in maintaining inventory records, invoices and prescription hardcopies.
• Maintains cleanliness, inventory, equipment, and supplies in the pharmacy area.
• Acts as a resource for non-judgmental pharmacy questions to staff, patients and visitors.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable rules and licensure; adheres to laws and accreditation requirements.

Rotating Shift

Primary Purpose

Provides direct support to pharmacists and pharmacy staff in preparing orders, packaging and labeling, tracking inventory, maintaining records, cashiering/payment collections and performing clerical duties.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education

• Must have a High School diploma or GED.

Experience

• Prefers experience in prior pharmacy technician health system roles such as inpatient pharmacy, IV/Infusion pharmacy, retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, and/or pharmacy repackaging.

Certification/Registration/Licensure:

• Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by exam from the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCE) or the National Healthcare Association (ExCPT) is preferred.
• Must have current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
• Failure to pass examination or comply with primary requirements will result in termination or the opportunity to apply for a posted non-pharmacy technician position with Parkland.

Skills or Special Abilities:

• Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of a PC, and be able to learn and use new software.
• Must be able to pass Pharmacy math and spelling test with a minimum score of 80%.
• Must successfully complete the necessary training requirements to perform cashier duties within 90 days from initial employment.
• Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills for area of responsibility.
• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the operation of equipment used in primary practice area.
• Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of different types of drugs.
• Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of medical and health care terminology.
• Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued care.

Responsibilities

• Follows established procedures to prepare and distribute medication orders, prescriptions and/or sterile products under pharmacist's general supervision. Accurately maintains and replenishes automation systems (if applicable).
• Operates an electronic cash register while entering correct charges, collecting accurate amounts of money and giving correct change to customers to ensure that payment is received for purchases.
• Prepares for each shift by obtaining and inserting the correct amount of cash in the appropriate cash register and ensure that the workstation is ready to service customers when the shift begins.
• Delivers remaining cash receipts and completed/approved reports to the manager, after each shift, while following established policies and procedures to ensure that all monies are secured and accounted for when the shift ends.
• May be asked to perform prescription order entry into the ambulatory pharmacy system.
• Assists in the maintenance of various inventory records, invoices and prescription hardcopies.
• Assists in the maintenance of assigned areas, including cleanliness, drug and supply inventory, equipment, and simple repair to ensure that pharmacy areas are clean, operational, contain the necessary supplies, and are free from obstacles.
• Acts as a resource person for non-judgmental pharmacy questions to medical staff, patients, and visitors.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the Pharmacy area, to include cashiering operations. Maintains licensure as a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician. Adheres to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
• Adheres to all PHHS procedures and house standards.
