Job summary

Detroit Medical Center is hiring a Pharmacy Technician to assist licensed pharmacists in preparing and delivering medications. Job description

Pharmacy Technician – Job Summary

Under the direction and final check of a licensed pharmacist, prepare, package and label IV and unit dose medications, card for both interim and maintenance orders, according to prescriber orders and established policies and procedures. Utilize mathematical calculations to ensure accuracy, maintain a sterile environment, and deliver floor stock medication, patient‑specific medication, emergency boxes and crash cart trays to patient care areas. May process and deliver controlled substances to patient care areas while maintaining appropriate inventory and documentation. Collect and return medication orders and unused or expired medications from patient care areas to the pharmacy for proper processing. Perform related charge functions and respond to requests and inquiries from hospital employees and customers, providing appropriate information regarding medication orders. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan by the designated date.
  • Prior pharmacy experience and/or completion of formal pharmacy technician training, including knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminologies is preferred.
  • Certification is preferred.
Skills Required
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to use an on‑line computer keyboard and typewriter, maintain patient profiles, capture charges, enter prescription data and access patient information.
  • Color vision to read prescriptions, recognize impurities in IV solutions and accurately fill prescriptions.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with physicians, patient‑care staff, department personnel and patients.
  • Mathematical ability to perform calculations, requiring knowledge of the metric system and use of a calculator.
  • Physical ability to transport medication delivery carts, lift 10–20 pounds, bend and move stock, frequently lift and transport medications weighing up to 60 pounds, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to move to and from various units and patient rooms frequently throughout the workday.
