Job summary

Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Associate to support both sterile and non-sterile preparation, dispensing and inventory control. The role collaborates with pharmacists and nursing staff to ensure safe, timely medication delivery and compliance with licensing requirements.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, Michigan pharmacy technician licensure (temporary or full) or eligibility, plus strong English communication, computer and basic math skills.

Job Summary

General Pharmacy Technician duties may include:

• Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticals
• Prepare sterile products, injections and IV chemotherapy
• Fill automated dispensing cabinets on nursing units
• Correctly distribute and account for controlled substances usage
• Deliver medications to nursing units including surgical rooms
• Stock medications shelves, manage inventory dating, return excess stock to inventory, properly dispose expired medications or return to manufacturer
• Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
• Respond and triage telephone and electronic message inquiries
• Assist the Pharmacist with auditing controlled substance utilization
• Complete restocking and dispensing activities using pharmacy automation
• Receive orders and prepare and package medications for outside clinics
• Build various medication kits, providing support to many different professions
• Conduct admission medication histories
• Assist the pharmacist in resuscitation bays
• Performing pharmacy cleaning and documentation
• Assist with training of staff
• Other duties and special projects as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications
• Work in a highly collaborative environment including Pharmacists, Pharmacy Managers, Technician Supervisors, and other medical professionals

Required Qualifications*

Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability: Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.

Pharmacy Technician Associate

• Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.
• Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills.
• This position requires primary source verification

Desired Qualifications*

At least one year of technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable. Basic algebra including performing pharmacy calculations is also highly desired.

Licensure & Certification

The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

Days (hours of operation between 7am-7pm, days of operation Monday-Saturday. Rotating schedules, holiday and on-call.

Work Locations

This is a pharmacy technician position. HomeMed is located at 2850 S. Industrial Hwy. Suite 50, Ann Arbor.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
