Job Summary: The Pharmacy Technician II plays a vital role in the UVA Health pharmacy team, delivering optimal medication management across all care dimensions. Responsibilities include preparing, dispensing, and labeling medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, maintaining accurate inventory, ensuring compliance with policies and legal requirements, and supporting pharmacy operations to provide safe, effective, and affordable medication use.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate competence in general and specialized pharmacy practice areas.
• Participate in training new pharmacy staff.
• Fill, prepare, and deliver medications under pharmacist supervision.
• Consistently follow pharmacy policies and procedures.
• Maintain adequate supplies for continuous patient care.
• Triage and escalated issues beyond the technician's scope to pharmacist or supervisor.
• Use appropriate information systems to process patient data.
• Maintain quality standards in line with departmental and legal requirements.
• Operate pharmacy equipment safely and efficiently.
• Keep thorough knowledge of medication names (trade and generic), dosages, routes, and adverse effects.
• Conduct patient interviews and communicate effectively with healthcare professionals.

• Ensure timely responses to service line requests.
• Greet and assist visitors to the department.
• Answer incoming telephone calls and provide accurate information.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: At least 18 months of relevant experience, including 12 months of sterile compounding, or 12 months of employment in a pharmacy setting.

Licensure: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required; certification via Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) required.

Additional Skills/Requirements: State registration or renewal evidence within 15 days prior to expiration; certification through PTCB, NHA, or enrollment in pharmacy school; basic math skills; strong written and verbal communication; ability to follow instructions; proficiency with basic technology; ability to travel to multiple facilities; ability to work in a high‑performing, change‑ready team.

Preferred Skills: Extensive knowledge of medication names, dosages, routes, adverse effects; demonstrated patient interview skills.

Physical Demands

The role requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping; repetitive movements; lifting and moving up to 100 lbs occasionally with safe handling equipment for weights over 35 lbs.
