Job summary

Salinas Valley Health Medical Center in Salinas, CA is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to assist pharmacists with medications for patients, prepare and deliver orders, and ensure accurate distribution under pharmacist supervision.

You will handle intravenous admixtures, chemotherapy under supervision, maintain certifications, stock, and coordinate with unit doses and Pyxis/Talyst systems; requires CA Pharmacy Technician Certificate and chemotherapy cert; experience in acute care preferred.

  • New hires have 120 days to obtain chemo certification and must stay current.

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists with medications to patients on a timely and accurate basis.

  • Replenish medications, stock rotational units and maintain narcotics accounting.
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas per schedule.
  • Maintain safety protocols and participate in competency assessments.

Job description

Department: Pharmacy Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists with providing medications to patients on a timely and accurate basis by collecting, preparing (including chemotherapy and other hazardous substances) and delivering medication orders as directed. Ensures sufficient and accurate drug distribution by verifying, entering and transmitting drug orders, processing credits and assisting clerical staff with processing of patient charges as required. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Enters medication orders into computer patient profiles accurately. Gathers medications for medication orders. Fills unit dose carts. Returns and credits unused medications and orders. Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule. Transfers medications in unit dose cassettes and IV room records for transferred and discharged patients. Accurately prepares intravenous mixtures and other sterile products, piggybacks, pediatric syringes, TPN’s and chemotherapy. Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals in appropriate locations. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. Answers phone for questions and referrals, identifying self and department. Answers requests at the window and makes stat deliveries to patient care areas when requested. Replenish medications in emergency crash cart drawer inserts/trays. Gathers and disperses medications to units: PYXIS Floor stock Responsible for accurate distribution of narcotics under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Maintains accurate accounting of CII safe inventory additions and dispensing to ADM’s. Compounds bulk sterile and non-sterile medications per established procedures. Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately per established procedures. Maintains current SVMH chemotherapy certification.

Keeps department neat and clean in specific areas assigned. Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. The pharmacist overseas process. Maintains competency required for current job title/position: Maintains current technician certification. Attends pharmacy staff meeting. Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Review literature and other materials as assigned. Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements (see attached competency assessment/skills list.) Maintains current SVMH chemotherapy certification. Prepares chemotherapy under supervision of pharmacist utilizing all safety double checks described in chemo preparation policy. Prepares medication packaging utilizing Talyst system as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Work requires knowledge generally acquired through a high school education or GED. Pharmacy Tech Certification course required. Licensure: Current California Pharmacy Technician Certificate required. SVMHS Chemotherapy Certification required. New hires/transfers have 120 days from date of hire/transfer to obtain Chemo Certification and must remain continually current.

Experience: 2 years equivalent acute care hospital experience or 2080 hours as a Pharmacy Tech I. Pyxis experience required.

Pay Range: The hourly rate for this position is $36.36 - $40.26. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for this position.
