Job summary

Children's Wisconsin is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacists in preparing, labeling, and delivering medications for inpatients and outpatients under supervision.

Under supervision of staff pharmacists, you will participate in aseptic preparation, unit-dose cassettes, and communicating with care teams while upholding safety and accuracy standards. A valid Wisconsin pharmacy technician license is required, with 1+ year pharmaceutical experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED/HSED required.
  • Graduate of a pharmacy technician program preferred.
  • Licensure as Pharmacy Technician in Wisconsin required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation, packaging, labeling and delivery of medications.
  • Follow USP 797 guidelines for sterile product preparation.
  • Interact with patients, families and medical staff to communicate medication information.
  • Maintain accurate narcotic counts and stock levels in dispensing units.
  • Support daily pharmacy automation and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Process admissions, discharges and transfers per policies.

Hours:

6:30-5:00pm or 10:30am--9pm (10 hour shifts) Monday- Friday 4 days a week. There is an every other weekend rotation, and 4 holidays per year.


Job Summary

Under the supervision of a staff pharmacist, the technician is responsible for providing technical support to pharmacists at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. This includes, but is not limited to, the preparation, packaging and delivery of medications for both inpatients and outpatients.


Essential Functions


  • Assists in the preparation, packaging, labeling and delivery of medications. Prepares all forms of medication (e.g.: oral, rectal, IV solutions, and syringes) for Hospital patients in accordance with the policies and procedures at CHW. Prepares and delivers unit dose medication cassettes to their respective units. Makes necessary modifications within the medication preparation process.

  • For sterile product preparation, utilizes aseptic technique and is knowledgeable of USP 797 guidelines. Is able to meet any required competencies per USP 797 guidelines.

  • Prepares and delivers unit dose medication cassettes to their respective units. In delivering medications to the units and beside, interacts and communicates with patients, families and other medical personnel appropriately.

  • Handles narcotics according to policy and procedures. Provides information to aid in the resolution of any discrepancies.

  • Effectively prioritizes workload based on meeting and exceeded internal and external customer expectations.

  • Assists in daily functioning and maintaining of inpatient and outpatient automation of pharmacy technologies and troubleshoots, if necessary.

  • Process patient admissions, discharges and transfers according to policies and procedures.

  • Stocks pharmaceuticals in the inpatient, outpatient and satellite areas. This includes ordering of medications, checking for outdates, and cleaning of the respective areas. Performs inspections of medication rooms, clinics and code carts as assigned.

  • Answers and responds to phone calls from parents, other hospitals or health care professionals.

  • Accurately maintains stock and narcotic counts in Automated Dispensing Units. Helps nursing staff with any issues related to the Automated Dispensing Units.


Education:


  • High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) required

  • Graduate of a pharmacy tech program preferred


Experience:


  • 1+ years experience in a pharmaceutical environment preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Good interpersonal and customer relations skills are needed to communicate effectively with various hospital personnel and families and to gather and exchange factual pharmaceutical information.

  • Ability to work well under pressure due to time constraints and varying workloads.

  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.

  • Ability to operate a computer in order to generate lists, process medication orders, enter charges/credits, generate labels, retrieve patient information, and handle automated dispensing unit functions.


Licenses and Certifications:


  • License Pharmacy Technician (41) - State of Wisconsin required
