Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Advanced order entry of physician orders into the pharmacy system.

  • Prepares patient specific medication orders for dispensing using department equipment.
  • Re-package and label unit doses and complete quality documentation.
  • Prepare sterile products using sterile technique where applicable.

  • Restock automated cabinets and prepare floor stock orders.
  • Prepare non-sterile products, ointments, creams and solutions.
  • Perform drug purchasing and inventory control activities.

  • Demonstrate problem solving for workflow and system improvement.
  • Prepare controlled substance orders for batch delivery and patient-specific orders.

Job description

Job Summary

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, assist with or perform tasks so that pharmacists may focus on improving patient care and therapeutic outcomes. Meets and maintains requirements as set forth in the pharmacy technician ladder document.

Responsibilities
  • Advanced order entry of physician orders into the pharmacy computer system. Proficient in pharmacy database order entry, automated dispensing cabinets, and TPN (as applicable).
  • Advanced sterile product preparation, including chemotherapy compounding, when appropriate for practice location.
  • Prepares patient specific medication orders for dispensing, utilizing equipment and automation that the department has to support the process. Medications are prepared using appropriate medication doses, routes of administration and dosage forms.
  • Re-package and label unit doses from a bulk supply of medication and accurately complete quality documentation associated with the process.
  • Prepares sterile products utilizing appropriate sterile technique, where applicable.
  • Handle, store and deliver medications and other chemicals providing due consideration to their chemical and physical properties.
  • Delivers medication via the department's medication distribution process.
  • Restocks automated dispensing cabinets and prepares and delivers floor stock orders, where applicable.
  • Demonstrate appropriate telephone communication skills.
  • Prepare non-sterile products, ointments, creams and solutions (topical, oral, rectal) using appropriate departmental procedures, where applicable.
  • Perform the basic functions of drug purchasing and inventory control defined as inventory re-stock levels, check in medication shipments, retrieve medications from storage areas, billing, filing of invoices and required documentation and record keeping. Participates in inventory control management.
  • Complete quality monitoring for medications in the department and patient care areas throughout the health-system.
  • Demonstrate problem solving skills with respect to work-flow and system improvement by working and cooperating with peers.
  • Prepare controlled substance orders for batch delivery to automated cabinets as well as patient specific orders for controlled substances.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact)The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

Education
  • Formalized Training (Required) Experience: 2-4 Years as Pharmacy Technician (excluding time as a Pharmacy Tech Trainee)
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required) Experience: 2-4 Years as Pharmacy Technician (excluding time as a Pharmacy Tech Trainee)
