Job summary

WVU Health System is seeking a Pharmacy Intern to assist in medication preparation, delivery, and inventory management under pharmacist supervision. You will read orders, prepare pediatric and geriatric dosages, and support sterile product preparation while maintaining accurate records.

The role requires enrollment in an accredited School of Pharmacy or equivalent qualification, and licensure or trainee licensure in the applicable state.

Qualifications

• Current license or trainee license as required by the respective state board.
• Enrollment in an accredited School of Pharmacy or graduate of a college of pharmacy, or foreign pharmacy graduate with FPGEC certificate.

Responsibilities

• Read physician orders, prepare medications, and deliver medications.
• Prepare medications for dispensing, including pediatric/geriatric dosage forms.
• Understand common pharmaceutical terms and abbreviations used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
• Assist in sterile product preparation under pharmacist supervision.
• Enter information into Pharmacy IV/TPN computer systems and label parenteral products.
• Maintain inventory and supplies, replace outdated medications, and assist with record-keeping.

Job description

Assists in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Interns function in accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• 1. Must possess current license or trainee license as required by state board where services will be provided: MD: Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license through Maryland Board of Pharmacy OH: Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license through Ohio Board of Pharmacy WV: Pharmacy Intern License (Registration) or Pharmacy Technician license through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy PA: Pharmacy Intern license through Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy
• 2. Must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited School of Pharmacy OR graduate of an approved college of pharmacy or graduate of a foreign pharmacy who has obtained Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee certificate for purposes of getting required intern hours OR qualified graduate who is awaiting examination for licensure OR individual participating in a residency or fellowship program.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 1. Responsible for reading physician’s orders, preparing medications, delivering medications, and ordering and delivering drug supplies for various patient‑care units.
• 2. Reads physician's orders and prepares medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patient populations.
• 3. Has an understanding of standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing and dispensing of medications.
• 4. Interprets cart fill lists and uses this information to replenish patient’s medications in medication carts and delivers contents to patient care areas according to schedule.
• 5. Accurately prepares and delivers controlled substances to patient units and maintains all necessary records.
• 6. Takes inventory and analyzes patient‑care area medication supplies, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications; replaces depleted inventory.
• 7. Assists in the preparation of sterile parenteral products under the supervision of a pharmacist.
• 8. Accurately prepares intravenous admixtures, including dilutions for pediatric patients, parenteral chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, other injectable preparations, and sterile irrigating solutions using aseptic technique.
• 9. Accurately enters information related to parenteral admixtures, parenteral chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and other injectable products in Pharmacy IV and TPN Computer Systems.
• 10. Labels parenteral products appropriately.
• 11. Performs general operational functions of a pharmacy intern.
• 12. Performs arithmetic calculations for usual dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
• 13. Performs initial check for pediatric doses for appropriateness based on weight and gestational age.
• 14. Performs in accordance with departmental standards established for speed and accuracy.
• 15. Prepares and labels prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements. Also maintains records related to this.
• 16. Maintains inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
• 17. Answers telephone and channels calls to appropriate individual.
• 18. Ensures that the pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas in the institution are kept clean and orderly.
• 19. Participates in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in staff meetings, committees, task forces and projects.
• 20. Assists in the education of pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, new pharmacists, new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
• 21. Prepares, processes and reprocess patient’s prescriptions and adjudications
• 22. Follows up with third parties on rejected claims and coordinates efforts to fix the problem
• 23. Assist with medication management therapy and pharmaceutical adherence programs
• 24. Works and coordinates with unit floors in discharge patients’ prescription and costs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• 1. Requires pushing/pulling of carts weighing up to one hundred pounds and lifting of boxes containing twenty-five or more pounds of sterile fluids.
• 2. Work requires standing and walking for greater than eighty per cent of work schedule.
• 3. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
