Job summary

Exalt Health is an acute rehabilitation hospital seeking a Pharmacy Director to lead the hospital pharmacy program. The role ensures safe medication use, oversees storage, dispensing, and clinical support within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed Pharmacist in state
• Experience building or launching a hospital pharmacy department is a plus
• Strong knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, and medication safety principles.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safe and effective use and administration of medications through proper storage, handling, evaluation, preparation, compounding, labeling, and dispensing.
• Provide oversight of the hospital pharmacy's clinical, operational, administrative, staffing, and financial management.
• Assign tasks, supervise Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, and support the Corporate Director of Pharmacy’s strategy.
• Serve as a member of the hospital Leadership Team.
• Verify medication orders for accuracy and potential interactions.
• Prepare, compound, and dispense medications per physician orders.
• Counsel patients and caregivers on medication use and safety.
• Monitor therapy for safety and efficacy; coordinate with physicians on adjustments.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and provide medication-related recommendations.
• Manage inventory and ensure proper storage and disposal of pharmaceuticals.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including controlled substances.

Description

Exalt Health, an acute rehabilitation hospital, provides an intensive rehabilitation program, and admitted patients must be able to tolerate three hours of intense rehabilitation services per day. Focused on caring for patients with complex rehabilitative needs such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, head trauma, medically debilitation conditions, neurological disorders, cardio-pulmonary amputations, orthopedic injuries, and multiple major traumas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Director ensures the safe and effective use and administration of medications through proper storage, handling, evaluation, preparation, compounding, labeling, and dispensing. In addition, The Pharmacy Director will provide oversight of the hospital pharmacy's clinical, operational, administrative, staffing, and financial management.

The Pharmacy Director will assign tasks, supervise and coach Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, and support the Corporate Director of Pharmacy’s strategy. The Pharmacy Director will also serve as a member of the hospital Leadership Team.

• Medication Order Verification: Thoroughly review and verify medication orders for accuracy, appropriateness, potential drug interactions, and allergies.
• Medication Dispensing: Prepare, compound, and dispense medications according to established protocols and physician orders.
• Patient Counseling and Education: Provide clear, understandable information to patients and their caregivers regarding medication use, potential side effects, and safe administration practices.
• Drug Therapy Monitoring: Assess patient medication regimens for safety, efficacy, and potential adverse drug reactions. Collaborate with physicians to recommend adjustments or alternatives as needed.
• Clinical Support: Participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds, providing medication-related expertise and recommendations to the healthcare team.
• Inventory Management: Maintain appropriate drug inventory levels, ensuring the timely ordering of medications and supplies while overseeing the proper storage and disposal of pharmaceuticals.
• Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations governing pharmacy practice, including controlled substance management and documentation.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Licenses or Certifications

• Current license to practice as a Pharmacist in the state where currently practicing.
• Licensed as a Consultant Pharmacist in the state where currently practicing.

Education, Training, and Experience

• Experience with the hands‑on build out of a pharmacy department and hospital pharmacy operations is a plus, from pre‑opening to department launch, including:
• Completing licensure applications
• Pharmacy inspection
• Implementation of automated dispensing cabinets (pending and loading medications)
• Pre‑packaging medications
• Interviewing and training staff
• B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE‑accredited School of Pharmacy
• Previous hospital supervisory experience required.
• 5 years of experience in a hospital or clinical setting (experience in rehabilitation preferred).
• Strong knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, and medication safety principles.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment and prioritize tasks.
• Commitment to patient education and providing compassionate care.
