About the School

Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four‑year MD program founded in 2021 that enhances traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole‑health principles. The school’s culture embraces self‑care to empower students to care for their own well‑being as well as their patients. The campus is located on Crystal Bridges, home to the Museum of American Art and the Heartland Whole Health Institute. AWSOM has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Position Overview

The assistant, associate or full professor of pharmacology is a full‑time, non‑tenured foundational sciences educator in the discipline of pharmacology. The faculty position is at the assistant, associate, and full professor level, and the assigned rank is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The incumbent works as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure allopathic medical students receive broad‑based training experience. Foundational sciences are interwoven throughout all four years of the curriculum. The faculty member draws from a history of teaching excellence in medical education and works well with colleagues across the respective phases and disciplines of medical education. Collaboration with other clinical and foundational science faculty for the development of clinical cases or learning activities to emphasize foundational science concepts and participation in the development and review of formative and summative assessment items are cornerstones of this position. Pharmacology faculty will have experience in multiple disciplines with clinical relevance including pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacogenomics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop Curriculum: Oversee the development and integration of all content tied to pharmacology, including the development of clinically relevant narratives and various assessment tools such as NBME‑style multiple‑choice questions and assessment of student performance in active learning sessions.
• Teach/Instruct/Facilitate: Actively engage in student instruction, developing and delivering content using active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty colleagues to create and deliver pre‑session and in‑session flipped classroom content. Facilitate small and large group active learning; serve as facilitator for small‑group discussion such as case‑based learning (CBL) and other small‑group sessions.
• Assessments/Evaluations: Create learning objectives related to respective foundational sciences and map them to the curriculum. Use appropriate metrics and assessment methods to ensure that students meet those objectives. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff for continuous quality improvement of courses, sessions, activities, and assessments.
• Serve: Participate actively in leadership and group membership within the medical school (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, etc.).
• Grow Professionally: Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational, and other skills needed to execute responsibilities.
• Other: Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD, PharmD, or equivalent) with specific training/experience in pharmacology or a closely related field, required.
• Experience delivering pharmacology content in higher education, required.
• Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education, required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an LCME or COCA accredited undergraduate medical education or postgraduate level education programs with concentration in pharmacology or a closely related field, required.
• Experience in curricular development, review, or implementation in higher education, preferred.
• Participation in inter‑disciplinary team endeavors, especially integration with medical microbiology content, preferred.
• Demonstrated experience and expertise in medical education, including curriculum development, formulating and editing assessment tools, and delivery in the field of pharmacology, preferred.
• Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating an integrated foundational science course, preferred.
• Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies (e.g., CBL, PBL, TBL, etc.), preferred.
• Understanding different assessment methods, preferred.

The role also requires interaction with both the public and internal team members in a professional and courteous manner. Some local travel will be required, and a flexible schedule may be necessary to accommodate business needs, including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
