Overview

The California Poison Control System (CPCS) is a 24‑hour informational hotline serving residents statewide in California. It is designated by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority and managed by the UCSF School of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy. CPCS operates from four UC-affiliated answering sites (UCSF/ZSFG, UCDMC, Valley Children’s Hospital, and UCSD) and manages approximately 250,000 calls per year using computerized information systems.

Responsibilities

• Respond to calls and provide assessment, information, management advice, in‑depth consultation, and follow‑up for emergency telephone toxicology and poisoning calls.
• Obtain pertinent information, assess seriousness of the situation, and answer callers with concise, relevant recommendations using language appropriate to the caller’s level of understanding.
• Serve as backup for Specialists in Poison Information and assist providers in the CPCS hotline service.
• Document all calls and consultations on the standard PCC written or electronic medical record form.
• Assist in CPCS teaching programs, including developing and presenting lectures to community and professional groups and pre‑cepting students and postgraduate residents/fellows.
• Participate in scholarly activities, including research, publications, and professional organizations.
• Attend quality‑improvement and professional‑development rounds and case conferences; investigate case history and literature to devise appropriate treatment and triage recommendations.
• Assist with the development of toxicology management protocols.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Pharm.D. Degree.
• CA Licensed Pharmacist in current good standing by the time of starting, or equivalent education/experience (minimum 2 years of clinically oriented pharmacy practice or 2 years poison‑control center experience).
• Excellent drug‑information skills and knowledge of pharmacology, toxicology, physical chemistry and pathophysiology.
• Knowledge of computerized databases and medical record systems.
• Experience with potential drug‑disease interactions.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills in English, adaptable to callers ranging from children and the public to healthcare professionals.
• Adherence to all operational policies, protocols, standards, and applicable philosophies and missions.
• Willingness to work an average of 80 hours over each 2‑week period, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post‑graduate or clinical pharmacy residency or fellowship training.
• AAPCC Certification as a Specialist in Poison Information or Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology.
• Involvement in scholarly activities.
• Multilingual proficiency.
• Willingness to work predominantly or exclusively night shifts.
