Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a pharmacist to join the Pediatric Pharmacy section at the NC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. The role focuses on providing patient-centered pediatric care, optimizing drug therapy, and ensuring safe distribution within a busy satellite pharmacy.

Responsibilities include reviewing prescriptions, interfacing with care teams, and guiding discharge medications. Candidates should hold a PharmD or BS in Pharmacy, be licensed or eligible in NC, and may have PGY1/PGY2

Qualifications

• Qualified candidates will have earned a BS in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school/college of pharmacy and must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of North Carolina.
• Completion of a PGY1 or PGY2 residency in pediatrics or an equivalent level of pharmacy experience is also preferred.
• Candidates should possess and demonstrate excellent initiative, communication, analytical skills, organization, and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Ensures timely medication access for service patients; including order review and verification.
• Receives prescriptions, interprets prescriptions, and reviews the patient's medication profile/history.
• Utilizes and analyzes patient data to provide optimal drug therapy recommendations.
• Compounds and oversees the preparation and dispensing of medications including sterile products using standard formulas, processes and procedures as required.
• Maintains patient profiles within electronic medical record to facilitate communication.
• Complies with the medication formulary, and therapeutic substitution and other programs designed to optimize drug therapy while minimizing cost as required.
• Directs workflow of the shift and supervises pharmacy technicians, students, and/or volunteers present during that shift.
• Facilitate discharge and transfer of patients (ie. medication reconciliation and discharge counseling).
• Practices medication safety including adverse drug event and medication error reporting.
• Adheres to federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
• Precepts students, residents and participates in training new pharmacy staff as required.

Summary:

The University Of North Carolina Hospital Department Of Pharmacy has an immediate opening for a highly motivated individual interested in providing patient care to our pediatric patient population.

This pharmacist will work in our pediatric satellite pharmacy, primarily day shift hours (0600-1430 and 0700-1530 shifts), to provide care of patients by optimizing medication use and drug distribution services. The pediatric pharmacy services 33 pediatric intensive care beds, 76 neonatal intensive care beds, 80 pediatric acute care beds, and multiple infusion clinics.

N.C. Children's Hospital is a major referral center for children with complex conditions and consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Children's Hospitals" on its annual list. N.C. Children’s Hospital has 181 inpatient beds and a comprehensive children's outpatient center located in the same building, enabling patients to see multiple specialists in a single visit. The Pediatric Services at UNC Hospitals and Clinics are in a period of growth. Our mission for the pediatric pharmacy is to provide quality, patient-centered care, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, for all pediatric patients within the Children’s Hospital by practicing evidenced-based medicine, optimizing medication use and distribution while ensuring medication safety.

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic and critical part of patient care provided by the UNC Health Care system. UNC’s Department of Pharmacy is an organization of more than 500 dedicated employees with focused attention on caring for patients of the UNC Health Care system. The Department is highly interactive with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, located on the same Chapel Hill campus. UNC Hospitals and Clinics acts as a major clinical and administrative training site for these pharmacy students, in addition to its greater than 40 pharmacy residents.

• Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment. Recent graduates of ACPE-accredited colleges/schools of pharmacy may fill this role while pending initial pharmacist licensure, but are subject to limitations mandated by the NC Board of Pharmacy and must obtain licensure within 6 months of orientation or sooner if required for operations.
