Job description

The Outpatient Pharmacist I is responsible for the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of medications according to the laws, policies, and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy. The pharmacist is responsible for the optimization of drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug‑related problems and adverse drug events.

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute focuses on life‑changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Appropriately dispense pharmaceuticals, including non‑sterile compounds, chemotherapy, biologics, controlled substances, and specialty medications for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Perform quality checks on prescription orders entered by pharmacy technicians; assist technicians with data entry of prescriptions for complex orders.
  • Provide direction to pharmacy technicians to promote operational efficiency (e.g., tech station assignment) and quality of the workflow.
  • Consult with patients regarding medication questions, concerns, and instructions as needed.
  • Review and evaluate all physicians’ medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing; consult with physicians and nurses to clarify orders as needed.
  • Review prescribed drug therapy for contraindications, including drug‑drug interactions, drug‑nutrient interactions, drug‑herb interactions, allergies, and the appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Document and report clinical interventions in the safety system; detect and report adverse drug reactions accurately, in a timely manner and per policy.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy.
  • Minimum Experience: No prior experience in hospital pharmacy or retail/specialty pharmacy is required.

License/Certification/Registration Required: Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
