Job summary

Polaris Specialty Pharmacy LLC in Covina, CA is seeking a Pharmacy Intern to support day-to-day operations, assist in preparing prescriptions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, and ensure accuracy in packaging and labeling.

The role involves data verification, patient consultations as defined by state board, handling controlled substances, and providing evening/weekend/holiday coverage while upholding HIPAA and quality standards. Training and growth opportunities offered.

Qualifications

  • Current registered Pharmacy Intern license must be active in California.
  • Pharmacy Doctorate candidacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Previous employment experience in a pharmacy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing all new and refill prescriptions with accuracy under a licensed pharmacist.
  • Maintain patient records including current and past medical history and medications.
  • Handle controlled substances and maintain a perpetual inventory under DEA rules.
  • Receive verbal orders from prescribers under pharmacist supervision.
  • Document communications with physicians, nurses and patients in the medical record.
  • Provide evening, weekend and holiday coverage as required by management.
  • Follow HIPAA and other government regulations; perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for providing day-to-day operational needs, as defined by State Board of Pharmacy with patient consultation, receiving verbal orders from prescribers, assistance in data verification, and preparation of prescription medication, adheres to the company’s quality and customer service standards, policies and procedures, state and federal guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of all new and refill prescriptions and orders. Check for content and accuracy of all medication packaging and labeling including emergency drug kits and IV medications under the direction of a licensed pharmacist
  • Maintain resident database to include appropriate current and past medical history, appropriate clinical and laboratory data, and concurrent medication (including OTC and home remedies)
  • Assist in the proper handling, receiving, documentation, and storage of all controlled substances; assist in maintaining a perpetual inventory for schedule II drugs
  • Receive verbal orders from prescribers under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Issue Emergency Drug Kit Authorizations for controlled medication removal in compliance with DEA regulations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, if applicable for appropriate pharmacy setting
  • Provide clinical expertise by responding to drug-related questions and concerns initiated by internal staff and external customers under the direction of a licensed pharmacist
  • Document all communication with physicians, nurses, other members of the healthcare team and patients/residents and their family members in the medical record.
  • Assist in the preparation of all sterile IV drug products or solutions, if applicable for appropriate pharmacy setting
  • Provide evening, weekend, and holiday coverage during rotation and as required by management
  • Follow all applicable government regulations including HIPAA
  • Other duties as assigned; Job duties may vary depending on business needs
  • Participate in Preferred Product and / or Therapeutic Interchange program, if applicable for appropriate pharmacy setting

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evening, weekends, and holidays
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and well-developed verbal and written communication skills with English as the primary language.
  • Ability to work independently as well as working in a team environment, meets deadlines, establish priorities, and be flexible, work under pressure with multiple tasks. Must have strong organizational, customer service, and time management skills, ability to problem solve.
Education and/or Experience
  • Current Registered Pharmacy Intern license must be active and in good standing in the state of practice
  • Previous employment experience in a pharmacy is preferred
  • Pharmacy Doctorate candidacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Perform accurately and efficiently when preparing prescription medications
Physical Demands
  • May sit or stand seven (7) to ten (10) hours per day
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, bend, walk
  • May be necessary to work extended hours as needed
  • May lift and/or move up to 30 pounds

Holiday & PTO Policy
  • Paid holidays are provided annually, with 6 days offered each year, along with 5 sick days.
  • Employees earn up to 10 PTO days each year, with rollover options and milestone bonuses.
  • Employees have the option to cash out up to 10 PTO hours each quarter for added financial flexibility.

Please note, because we are a pharmacy most of our locations are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and therefore schedules may change as determined by the needs of the business.
