Job summary

Mercyhealth is seeking a pharmacist to ensure safe, effective medication therapies and to dispense orders accurately in a 40-hour, day-shift schedule across facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois. You will provide timely drug information, monitor safety and quality, and supervise pharmacy technicians while maintaining formulary and compliance with all laws.

You will participate in quality improvement activities, review literature, and support education for staff and new hires as an integral member

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy program.
  • Wisconsin and/or Illinois license required.
  • Computer experience and accuracy in calculations for dosage.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, dispenses medication orders per physician request according to policies.
  • Provides drug information to staff, patients and families.
  • Monitors for medication safety, reports adverse events and assists with pharmacokinetics consults.
  • Supervises technicians and coordinates daily pharmacy operations.
  • Maintains formulary and compliance with laws and risk management policies.

OVERVIEWThe pharmacist safely prepares and manages medications, provides drug information, and helps healthcare staff choose the right treatments for patients. They also supervise pharmacy staff, monitor medication safety and quality, manage controlled substances and supplies, and stay current with professional education and laws.SCHEDULE: 40-hours per weekSHIFT: DaysESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPrepares, dispenses medication orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures, & protocols.Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to professional staff, patients and patient families. Documents these activities, as needed.Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols. Detects and accurately reports, suspected adverse drug reactions and medication occurrences. Assists other professional staff to identify med errors/ adverse reactions.Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data; conducts quality monitors and inspections; and maintains logs/records and other documentation, as assigned.Assists with pharmacokinetics consult service/drug dosing per organizational protocol. Reviews/interprets culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness and recommends changes. Assists professional staff with managing patient's pain.Supervises, directs, and coordinates the daily activities of the pharmacy technicians/ support personnel.Provides input for pharmacy support personnel performance appraisals. Performs essential duties of the pharmacy director in his/her absence.Adheres to health system policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.Actively participates in the department's quality improvement activities, hospital committees, department/team meetings. Assists new hires in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials, as assigned.Maintains competence required for current job title/position including: maintains current professional licensure and completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.Maintains formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational drug selection. Monitors any investigational drugIssues controlled substances to patient care areas & maintains records required by law. Resolve discrepancies as needed.Maintains professionalism and conducts self as a role model, serving as a resource for the other retail pharmacy partners.Maintains practice by ongoing professional literature review, continuing education and self-evaluation.EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEGraduate of an accredited Pharmacy programCERTIFICATION/LICENSUREWisconsin and/or Illinois license requiredOTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIESComputer experience, including internet and email.Strong accuracy skillsExcellent interpretive/analytical skills for pharmaceutical calculations for drug dosage, IV rates, etcLEVEL OF SUPERVISIONN/ASUPERVISESThis position supervises technicians. This position is involved in the recruitment and orientation process and provides performance feedback and input for performance evaluation purposes.
