Erie County Medical Center Corporation is seeking a licensed pharmacist to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical services across inpatient and outpatient settings. The role includes drug distribution, medication preparation, patient counseling, and collaboration with physicians to ensure safe, effective therapy.

The incumbent will supervise support staff, manage unit-dose and IV admixtures programs, and maintain detailed records while ensuring compliance with hospital procedures and safety

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy; completion of six months of experience as a pharmacist in a health care system.
  • Completion of a six-month pharmacy internship in a health care system or ASHP-accredited residency may substitute for the required experience.
  • Possession of a Pharmacist license in NYS at time of permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Fills physicians' orders and manufactures preparations by standard procedures; prepares and sterilizes injectable medications and other compounds.
  • Identifies drugs brought into the hospital and obtains drug histories; communicates information to physicians.
  • Consults with physicians regarding drug interactions and efficacy; offers alternatives and clarifications.
  • Supervises support personnel in drug preparation and delivery services, unit dose system, IV admixtures, outpatient dispensing, record maintenance.
  • Provides drug information to medical staff, nursing staff, and other professionals.
  • Instructs patients regarding drug therapy.
  • Oversees manufacture, preparation, packaging and pre-packaging of all dosage forms; supervises quality and safety.
  • Inspects nursing units to ensure proper storage and integrity of medications.

Job description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing professional pharmaceutical service for drug distribution and control at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent participates in work activities of one or more service areas including inpatient drug distribution, outpatient drug distribution and pharmaceutical technology. The incumbent assumes responsibility for quality, quantity and sensitivity of pharmaceutical services of an assigned area to assume maximum safety and efficiency of drug therapy. Work is performed under the general supervision of a professional employee of higher rank. Supervision is exercised over a number of support personnel relating to drug preparation and distribution. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Fills physician’s orders and manufactures preparations by means of standard physical and chemical procedures; prepares and sterilizes injectable medication and other compounds;

Identifies drugs brought into the hospital by patients; obtains drug histories and communicates information to physicians;

Consults with physicians concerning problems of drug incompatibility, interaction and efficacy; offers alternatives and obtains clarification of all questionable orders;

Supervises support personnel in drug preparation and delivery services such as unit dose system, intravenous admixtures program, outpatient dispensing functions, control drug dispensing, and record maintenance;

Provides drug information and references to medical staff, nursing staff, and other professionals;

Instructs patients regarding drug therapy;

Supervises the manufacture, preparation, packaging and pre-packaging of all sterile and non-sterile dosage;

Inspects nursing units to assure proper storage, use and integrity of floor stock medications.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of principles, procedures, terminology and equipment of pharmacy; good knowledge of techniques of compounding drugs; good knowledge of large scale hospital pharmacy procedures and techniques; ability to perform a variety of professional pharmaceutical tasks with a high degree of accuracy; ability to maintain detailed pharmaceutical records and to prepare reports; ability to supervise and get along well with others; initiative and resourcefulness; industry and dependability; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation..

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited School of Pharmacy and completion of six (6) months of experience as a pharmacist in a health care system *.

NOTE 1: *Completion of a six (6) month pharmacy internship in a health care system or an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency, not included in the educational requirement above, may be substituted for the required qualifying experience.

NOTE 2: *Completion of six (6) months of work in a healthcare system, drug manufacturing or biopharmaceutical setting performing tasks such as, but not limited to sterile compounding, sterile preparation or supervisory work, not included in the educational requirement above, may be substituted for the required qualifying experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a license to practice as a Pharmacist as issued by the New York State Department of Education at time of Permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
