Job summary

Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD, seeks an experienced Emergency Department Pharmacist to join a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team. Embedded in the ED, you will provide direct pharmaceutical care, respond to medical emergencies, and support resuscitations with timely, evidence-based medication management.

Responsibilities include optimizing therapy for critically ill patients, antimicrobial selection, dosing, toxicology, and transitions of care, plus education for staff and students.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with license in good standing.
• Experience in hospital or ED setting preferred.
• Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency in emergency medicine or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Respond to medical emergencies and provide medication support during resuscitations.

The Emergency Department Pharmacist is an integral member of the emergency care team, providing direct pharmaceutical care in a dynamic, high-acuity environment. Embedded within the Emergency Department, this pharmacist works alongside physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacy colleagues, and other interdisciplinary partners to support timely clinical decision-making and safe, effective medication use.

Job Description

Key responsibilities include responding to medical emergencies, providing medication support during resuscitations, optimizing therapy for critically ill and complex patients, identifying and resolving medication-related problems, and offering real-time clinical consultation. The pharmacist also supports antimicrobial selection, medication dosing, toxicology management, procedural sedation, emergency preparedness, and transitions of care.

Additional responsibilities include prospective patient profile review, medication-order verification, medication preparation and procurement during urgent situations, and education for patients and healthcare professionals. The pharmacist may also participate in quality-improvement initiatives, protocol development, interdisciplinary education, and the precepting of pharmacy students and residents.

Qualifications

In a medical-center or institutional setting: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Must have a thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations. Hospital experience or residency preferred.

Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency in emergency medicine or equivalent emergency medicine pharmacy experience preferred.

License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
