The main purpose of this position is to ensure the safe, accurate, effective, and compliant use of medications for the inmate population at Louisiana State Penitentiary and other facilities serviced by the LSP Pharmacy. The Clinical Pharmacist reviews and evaluates medication orders for accuracy, appropriate therapy, potential interactions, allergies, adverse reactions, and other medication-related concerns while collaborating with healthcare providers to resolve identified issues.

The position is also responsible for pharmacy quality assurance and regulatory compliance, including proper medication storage, handling, inventory control, controlled-substance accountability, recordkeeping, medication-use evaluation, and compliance with federal, state, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Additionally, the Clinical Pharmacist provides medication-related education and guidance to patients, healthcare staff, and security personnel to promote proper medication administration and overall medication safety.

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice pharmacy plus two years of experience as a licensed pharmacist.

Job Duties:

Medication Review & Patient Safety – Review prescriptions for accuracy, proper dosage, strength, indications, allergies, interactions, duplicate therapies, contraindications, and potential adverse drug reactions.

Clinical Consultation & Medication Management – Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to resolve medication-related concerns and ensure safe and effective drug therapy.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance – Conduct pharmacy and treatment-center inspections, monitor medication storage and handling, maintain required pharmacy and controlled-substance records, and ensure compliance with federal, state, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.

Medication Education & Training – Develop and provide education to patients, nursing staff, healthcare providers, and security personnel regarding proper medication use, administration, side effects, precautions, and new medication information.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Employee will work with a dult male inmates of all custody levels – minimum, medium, maximum (death row), and protective custody.
  • Employee will supervise lower-level staff.

  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
