Job summary

Barnes & Thornburg LLP is seeking an associate with 1–4 years of life sciences patent prosecution experience to join its Intellectual Property Department. You will work with a growing life sciences patent team on pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and ag-biotech technologies.

The ideal candidate has an advanced degree in organic chemistry, hands-on U.S. and foreign prosecution experience, and interest in global portfolio development and due diligence.

Qualifications

• 1–4 years of patent preparation and prosecution in life sciences technologies.
• J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
• Registration to practice before the USPTO.
• Advanced degree in organic chemistry or closely related field (Ph.D. preferred).
• Excellent writing, analytical and communication skills for explaining complex chemistry.
• Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications for life sciences.
• Engage with inventors and examiners and respond to Office Actions.
• Develop prosecution and global filing strategies with clients and supervising attorneys.
• Conduct analyses on patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity, and non-infringement.
• Support transactions, due diligence, and related opinions and client communications.
• Collaborate with in-house counsel, scientists, and other firm practice groups.
