Job summary

Barnes & Thornburg LLP is seeking an associate with 1–4 years of life sciences patent prosecution experience to join its Intellectual Property Department. The associate will work alongside a nationally respected and growing life sciences patent team, helping sophisticated clients protect innovations at the frontier of pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and ag-biotech technologies.

The ideal candidate has an advanced degree in organic chemistry and will have hands-on experience in U.S.

Qualifications

• 1–4 years of patent preparation and prosecution in life sciences.
• J.D. degree from an accredited law school with strong academics.
• Registration to practice before the USPTO.
• Advanced degree in organic/medicinal chemistry; Ph.D. preferred.
• Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to explain complex chemistry clearly to clients and examiners.

Responsibilities

• Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in life sciences.
• Engage with inventors and examiners; respond to Office Actions.
• Develop prosecution and global filing strategies with clients.
• Perform patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity and non-infringement analyses.
• Support transactional diligence and related opinions and agreements.
• Collaborate with in-house counsel, scientists, and firm teams.
• Grow ownership of matters with mentorship and client relationships.
