Job summary

Optum is seeking a Manager, Controls Engineering & Automation in Mesa, AZ. You will lead a team of controls and automation engineers, delivering PLC/SCADA, robotics, and manufacturing systems for high-volume pharmaceutical operations.

Travel ~25%, in-office 3 days/week, 2 days remote. The role emphasizes technical leadership, reliability, and continuous improvement in partnership with Operations, Quality, Facilities, and Technology.

Qualifications

8+ years in industrial automation or related technical environments.
3+ years of engineering leadership with talent development and team management.
Experience in high-volume pharmaceutical, distribution, or automation environments.
Experience with PLC, HMI, SCADA, robotics, and automated material handling systems.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop a team of Controls and Automation Engineers.
Manage design, programming, implementation, and support of PLC, HMI, SCADA, robotics, and industrial control systems.
Translate priorities into team plans, resource needs, and objectives.
Collaborate with Automation Eng, Operations, Quality, Facilities, and Tech to improve reliability and efficiency.
Provide technical leadership for automation projects including deployments, upgrades, and integrations.
Lead root-cause analysis for complex automation issues.
